Advice / Info on attending Jagiellonian Medical College

Hi!,
I am looking to study at a international medical school and found that Jagiellonian has a 4 year M.D program in English. I was wondering if anyone has gone there and if they found the curriculum to be impressive and suitable for furture post graduate training in the U.S. any info / advice would be great! Thanks

let me talk to my buddy who's brother received that degree from there. i'll post up what his impressions were but from what i gathered he loved it and thought highly of the program.

Better avoid Eastern european universities.They are not highly reputated and is likely to be suspected of having bribed for the degree.Maybe exception is the Karl university in Prague but again I do not know.Poznan has a faculty for international students,they try to attract foreign medical students,maybe they offer something better.
If I were you,I would prefer to study in Germany where there are some chances for research and the level of education is considered good.The entrance is also not very difficult and the demands inside the university reasonable.(drop rate 30% after exams in 2nd,4th year).Avoid South Europe as well,no advantage at all.

Not true, but if you wanted to reassure yourself maybe you could have a chat about carrying on your post grad training in the US now.

Thank you Plk123 that would be great! I hope to get into a pediatric residency after my graduate training and everyone that I have talked to said that Poland and Germany are advanced in this field, hopefully my lack of language skills can be polished in a expeditive time.

yeah, jagellonian u. is highly reputable especially in this program. it is also internationally known. i think he further studied in budapest but i do no know what either direction these were in. i'll find out a bit more tomorrow. he works in the US right now.

My cousin went to med school in krakow. He completed his studies in polish, but on his campus there were many foreigners studying in english. Most of the foreign students were from Norway, where apparently this polish med school is recognized.

As for coming back to canada/usa, it's possible but a bit tricky. My cousins friend (a polish canadian) studied in krakow and after graduating he went back to canada where he had to go through some kind of transition program. I believe it was 1 year long and included many exams, followed by the usual 2 year (i think) internship program where the newly graduated doctor works along side a qualified/experienced doctor. It is not very easy at all. That's all i know, if i talk to my cousin sometime soon i'll update my post.

In the meantime you can contact the college of physicians (or whatever its called in the usa) and find out how it works.

Also, if i remember correctly it's a 6 year program.

I want to thank you all for the helpful info I really appreciate it. The licensing situation seems to be a bit of a hassle if I choose to go to a foreign medical school, mostly because the first U.S Medical Licensing exam is in the 2nd year and not available in Poland. I'v requested info from USMLE to see if they have dealt with similar situations.
I really hope I can work this out not only is it a great way to have a diverse cultural experience but at Jagiellonian the going price for 1st year is $16,593 (if the currency converter is correct) compared to the mind boggling $40,000 at some of my choice schools in the U.S I will update when I have more info thanks!

that's absolutely ******** man. Jagiellonky Universyty (Cracov) is one of the oldest in the world and also one of the best - he is known as a University with one of the highest level of education in Europe.

well...Uniwersytet Jagielloński is the oldest in Poland, one of the best in Poland, in Europe too... but if you bring your diploma to the US and transfer your grades, it maybe will equal to a Bachelor's degree here, not Master's ...
but still, it's a good school...

oh yeah.. the guy is in krakow right now actually but will return in a week or so.. i'll know more then.. his brother told me that he was very satisfied with his studies there and is doing a residency in US.. he switched his specialty though somewhere along the way but not sure if that was after or during the studies at jagiellonian. the brother didn't mention any issues and i am sure he'd be aware of that if there were any. remind me in a week or so and i'll ask again.

"southern" has no idea what s/he is talking about. Jag is an excellent medical school and places residents in North America regularly. The transition to the US involves completing the USMLE (Step One and Step Two CS/CK), and the rest of the ECFMG requirements. If you don't pass the USMLE you can't practice medicine, even if you graduated from Harvard. Look on the internet and you will find plenty of Jagiellonian graduates who can give you their two cents... One of the hospitalists at the medical center where I work actually recommended considering the good European medical schools over the Caribbean schools (some of which are also a viable option for practice in the States). There are good and crappy schools everywhere, if you are looking foreign. Do your own research and make a wise decision.
