Niagara Region in Ontario is ideal. In fact many Americans buy properties here.

Living in places such as St. Catharines, Thorold and vicinity you are just over an hour drive from Toronto and 15 minutes to the US border. Buffalo would be about 30 to 40 minutes away. St. Catharines has a community of about 10K Poles, and Polish stores good enough for Buffalonians( sp. ?) to drive up here to shop.

Property prices are half decent, depending on what your needs are.

Toronto is great but too expensive and too busy, so if one like big cities it is definately a good choice, but I would move out of I had a chance.

Used to be nice but a lot changed in the last 15 years.

Personally, I'd stay away unless you can afford one of those $2 mil houses, or like a 2 hour commute from one of the bedroom neighborhoods. The place is overpriced and crowded. The city somehow lacks a soul. Something I cannot describe.

Wifey always wanted to live in a large city, as she comes from Wroclaw and we used to live in NYC. But having been to TO numerous times we are happilly living about an hour away from it.

Ive carried out a little research and was looking at some of the neighbouring towns, found some nice houses for around the $250-$350k mark. My wife really wants to live in Canada and I must say I think its quite a good idea aswell providing I can generate some kind of business. Were planning a little North America trip shortly so Toronto will be on my list.

I would avoid Toronto like the plague. I think Toronto is highly overrated by people who have never lived here or only visited a couple of times. By far one of the least attractive cities i've visited in north america. Houses are expensive and don't expect to get a nice backyard. I have some family in downtown TO and although their house is nice, it is practically touching the one next to it. Maybe i'm a little biased as i live near TO.
As suggested above, the Niagara region is a great place to live: smaller cities, cheap houses and close proximity to the USA. You can start up your own wine business:) I wouldn't mind living in Montreal either.

Brantford Ontario has a very sizeable Polish population. A good friend of mine used to live there.

You could move to Windsor. There are many Polish stores across the bridge or tunnel in the Detroit burbs.

Toronto isn't that bad! I live in the Tdot and love it. I don't live downtown though (and would never want to lol). towns within the GTA are great. Etobicoke is a personal fave of mine. Mississuaga is another good one. In Mississauga you can also get a decently sized home for a decent price, and lots of Polish communities in Mississauaga too. Mississauga is the home of Fregata! LOL

I was kidding :). It's definitely overrated. Weekends its nothing more than a drinking fest.

I have been with my GF for a little over a year now. She won't disagree with me because she has this whole male superiority stigma. She won't EVER talk back to her dad or her older brother or grandpa. So she won't ever talk back to me. In my GF's family women r supposed to serve men. I know u'll say it's bad but it is just how it is in her family. It's kind of nice as long as ur not the one doing the serving.

Her brother is going to be an interesting case though since he works a rinky dinky job as an electrician for 20 buxx an hour and his fiance is a pharmacist which makes 60$ an hour. She works about 50 hours a week and they don't live together yet even though they have a house. An expensive one 2 at 600,000. I am really hoping he steps up to a better job because otherwise it's going to b very hard on his future wife.

There is NO way they could make the payment on their house without her working. His salary probably wouldn't even cover the payment on that house let alone necessities. I am going to lose all respect for him if his wife has to clean the house, cook, raise the kids and be the primary source of income. She won't even be able to take a maternity leave because of the fat house payment.

I seriously hope something changes because my GF claims he would never ever be a stay at home daddy because allegedly it would b viewed as disgraceful. I have a feeling their kids r just gonna get stuck with their grandparents every day while mommy and daddy work all day. It's kind of sad! I plan on being the sole source of income when i marry my GF so she can at least stay home with the kids until they r 11 or 12. That is wat I had growing up and I wouldn't have it any othere way. It's pathetic when having a big house full of empty space and gender roles come before your children's livelyhood!

In my family, my mom serves everyone dinner every night, but she also completely dominates everyone. My mom is full-time teacher, runs my dads business (plus the extra business of flipping houses), and still does the cooking and cleaning. She is a super woman, but she can also be super terrifying.
Its odd that you ended up with the Polish girl that doesn`t talk back or say whats on her mind. Polish women may serve certain gender roles, but they`re usually more than ready to argue with something they disagree with.

Wow, that really sucks for him. Here, he`d be making $50+ per hour, no problem. My friend`s boyfriend is a custodian at an elementary school and he makes about 20 per hour, and gets benefits (no Polish cleaner jokes please because they`re both Portuguese)
If he`s young he could just be starting out. Is there a market for electrician`s or are there too many in Cali? Maybe he should look for a different labour job that pays more.
It would definitely be an embarrassment for his family if he stayed home. If that`s what they decide to do, eventually the family will get used to it, but it will be hard for them in the beginning because that`s still seen as something that women should do. Either way, I`m sure they`ll work something out. Once they have children, they`ll have no choice but to do what is best for the little ones :)

She sounds like she`ll be okay with it. You know, she doesn`t really need to stay home until they`re 11-12 because they`ll be in school all day and she`ll have nothing to do but scratch her butt and wait (of course there`s cleaning and cooking but thats not exactly satisfying work for most women).

50$ per hour as an electrician? NO WAY really? In cali u make 30$ at best maybe up to 40 if ur lucky. Plumbing is the trade industry to be in if u want $ u can make 70-90 an hour in cali no problem. I was actually considering it for a while because one of my friends dads who is a master plumber wanted to pass his business onto some1 and take on an apprentice and he makes 150k+ a year. Some years I guess he went up to 300k. There is more of a demand for plumbing though because more stuff goes wrong with it. When they aren't building new houses it can b hard to find work as an electrician.

There aren't labor jobs in cali that pay well outside plumbing or electricity. They hire mexican'ts for 10 dollars an hour to do everything from masonry to roof framing! Besides the specialized trades u can't even begin to compete with the mexicants.

Yah she might teach after they start school at age 5. But i want her to be around them all hours after they are out of school. I WILL NOT STICK MY KIDS IN DAYCARE OR GIVE THEM TO SOME STUPID OLD PEOPLE TO RAISE! ? As for satisfying my 8 inch clarinet playing will satisfy her every day ;). I know that isn't wat u meant but i just had to add that in.

A few of my parent's friends are electricians and they make a very decent living. I think it depends on what type of electrician; construction electricians are in demand so they're making a lot of money. Pretty much any job related to construction is an opportunity for money. Parts of Toronto are really old so flipping, renovation and construction are all huge potential money-making industries. Plus, cities surrounding Toronto are starting to grow, so those jobs are very much in demand. My dad's a contractor that specializes in bathrooms and he charges per job rather than per hour. He charges at competitive rates and still makes thousands weekly.

Old people are awesome. I loved being with my grandparents when i was younger because they spoiled us so well :)

not what I meant at all. I suppose it wouldn't be an authentic 'Rocky' post if you didn't throw it in somewhere that you like banging your girlfriend :)

If all he can do is wire houses he will make low 20's forever. Industry is where it's at, $40+/hr, overtime galore. Gotta know what you're doing at that stage though.

Definitely. No one will give you the money if you don't know what you're doing or if you don't have much of a reputation.
