No, I think everyone knows how/if she or he should express their emotions.
The point is - reading text on a computer screen is strenuous enough for the eyes; so why make it even more difficult by providing graphical signs between text? There are probably hundreds of thousands of different newspaper titles in the world - does at least one of them use graphical emoticons between the lines of text? Why not..? :)
We could probably be able to add dozens of different smilies, signatures, animated avatars, etc. But we think the message content, not the fluff/noise is what really matters. For example, would you spend a lot of time on a forum like that (could you differentiate between the actual message content and the "fluff"):
