I would have to agree with Wroclaw Boy - being black and having a lot of American relatives, I can certainly say that American society is certainly much more segregated than any other society I have lived in, with the exception of China, perhaps!

There's simply nowhere as cosmopolitan as London :)

Some of the American people I've met were the most open-minded, the least prejudced people ever. God bless them!

this is true for me as well, however it's also true for a ton of brits i've come to know and adore. as individuals we can't really make blanket statements about entire cultures and expect there not to be either a-exceptions or b-people who flat out disagree based on their own prejudices.

FISZ makes a damn good point though, money is a very powerful "segregating" force.

Having lived both in the USA and Poland, I can say they are both racist. Though in very diffrent ways. Poles out of poverty hate other groups like Jews Roma, etc, In the USA they do not like them, but seprate from them. Blacks, mexicans, etc, stick to their own areas.

i have never experienced a nation to be so racist in my entire life!!

You're full of it man. We're no more racist than Poles. All I hear around is "I hate Jews, I hate Germans, I hate Russians" etc. Before you criticize someone else look at yourself first.

Well, ...the more income you have, you live in a better home, in a better neighborhood, you drive a better car, whatever. It has nothing to to with race or minorities. You have money, you live where you want.

WOW, obviously not EVERY American is racist...

also, yes Poland is also very racist. To think otherwise is just ludicrous. Heck, i'd bet that 90% of members here are racist in one way or another. Sure most of us aren't ever going to take it too far by putting on some dumb white hood, and burn a cross in someones yard.

Some of us are some of us aren't, just like anywhere else.

In the 2000 US Census, the form asked for the "race" of those in the house hold, I checked "other" and wrote in "human". (It's a crime in the USA to lie on a government form and according to science there is only one human race, I didn't want to go to jail ;-)

Anyway, a few months later a census taker knocked on the door, asked for me, and wanted to know why I filled the form out that way. I told him, and he told me to just mark Caucasian next time.

Sadly, until the US Government stops asking for "Race" when it means ethnic background, racism will not end in the USA.

- Who in his right mind really cares about whom you - yourself a racist from Britain - consider 'racist'? Really, you're not an authority on the subject of racism, pal. Your accusing ALL Americans of racism is racist too. What a twisted-minded ridiculous creature you are.
:)

Every person has the same opportunity to make something of themselves in America, many of those in the fast food rest. are illegals, they hold many of these jobs, people dont care, Americans dont want to do these jobs anymore. I am sorry your experience has been bad, there are many other areas in this country that are much different, I found the east coast where I lived for 44 yrs to be contemptable at times and rude, however in the mid west is much doff. Visit other areas and you will see a much different pic.

In the South, much more so yes but in smaller states like North Dakota or Wyoming, not so much. Collectively, as a nation, they may be seen to be racist as many ethnic groups may speak out against the govt of the time but that's because America is a melting pot, MUCH more multicultural than Poland, so the race issue will always be to the fore. Republicans, almost by design, don't favour non-whites but that doesn't make them blatant racists either, they just have other priorities. I'm not a Republican btw, definitely a Democrat

All fast food places are places to stay away from. I do not even consider that to be fit to be called food. I see gourmets you are not. Arby's, McD's, BK...uh uh!!!!!

But if you really must then I think that Wendy's is decent.

You were right in saying that there are many unfriendly people in some parts of the U.S. but it's not racism. Sometimes it's just stress. People in Los Angeles can be very unfriendly because it's such a stressful place. I've been yelled at by people who work in miserable jobs just for asking a simple question.

But you'll find that people are very friendly outside of these areas. People will actually smile, greet you, and they just seem more relaxed.

I see a lot of negative talk in here about the fast food chains.
They are one of the greatest employers in the US. During the summer holidays they employ scores of school kids during the summer months.. They do not sponge off of their parents.. They work to buy their own clothes for the school year. They go on to a better education so they can get better jobs in the future. Yes ,you see more minorities in the poorer neighborhoods..But they too have the same opportunity as the white kids have.
I have lived in Florida for 35yrs.. I wonder why I haven't noticed the discrimination talked about on here.

Are you a minority? Have you had any close friends who were minorities (I mean living in those areas)? Maybe that's why you've never seen it in 35 years. I've seen so many minorities face discrimmination. At one time they were not allowed into college like the "white kids".

This whole thread is pointless, a nation or country as a whole cannot be racist. There are people within those nations who are racists. To even think about saying the majority of America is racist is unfounded and untrue, i'm not saying that as an American either!!!.

Every country has a few idiots who are racist, there are racists in Jamaica, Pakistan, Poland, England, Nigeria, Colombia etc etc. Wherever in the world you go there is racism in some form.

The Poster of this forum should be ashamed and should close down the thread, i haven't even read who created it or what they had to say, reading the thread name was enough to tell me it was pointless!!!!!

Very dumb generalization to be made, all because you went to Florida and some worker looked at you with contempt. You know it is possible that this person is just rude, call me crazy but it is possible. Maybe he heard your accent and had some weird look on his face because he was trying to get a good look at your teeth, just to see if that generalization is a fair one to be made.

Yes, made by a British chucklehead, pay it no mind.

As if you wouldn't get rude treatment in Brixton or something.

i think its fantastic that fast food chains give kids the opportunity to learn the responsibilities of work and earn their own way. but i find it difficult to reconcile this against the harm that fast food is causing to huge segments of society. perhaps the very segments that they are employing.

i have a friend who is a marketing manager for philip morris. she is very successful at her job and has increased sales dramatically. in poland at one point. this is great for her and i am glad she is doing so well in her job but in my mind she is peddling death. and i have problems wishing her well in this.

im not going to equate the health issues of eating too much fast food with smoking but the dangers undeniably exist. obesity and diabetes, both linked to fast food, is a significant concern throughout america and LA city council has recently acknowledged this and banned the sale of it in poorer areas. quite rightly so

lets not find excuses for fast food.

they might well be a great employer in america, but does this outweigh the harm they are doing

Shewolf;
No, I do not consider myself a minority.. So what is a minority?) If growing up poor makes one a minority.. Then yes, consider me as one..My family was too poor to send me to college..But starting with menial jobs, we as a family prospered.. We were not afraid of work.

well when you say america you have to be more specific. the people or government for one thing. the government is certainly racist. look at the history. first the whites killed the native people after making treaty after treaty. then it was based on first white slave labor (indentured servants) from Europe and then later on involuntary slavery from africa. lincoln only gave the slaves freedom because it would cripple the south and the north could win the war. the country is an experiment. whenever you take loads of people from around the world and put them in one place there will be problems. I can say that I have been around a bit and unfortunately everybody is racist. there are individual exceptions but as far as nations somebody is always hating somebody. most of the problem in america is economic. if you are white, other people assume you are rich. the government has never apoligized for slaverly let alone given the freed slaves what they promised them - land. anyway the non-whites if not already in the majority if you count illegals will be taking over population wise very soon.
