Franek:
I see a lot of negative talk in here about the fast food chains.
They are one of the greatest employers in the US. During the summer holidays they employ scores of school kids during the summer months..
i think its fantastic that fast food chains give kids the opportunity to learn the responsibilities of work and earn their own way. but i find it difficult to reconcile this against the harm that fast food is causing to huge segments of society. perhaps the very segments that they are employing.
i have a friend who is a marketing manager for philip morris. she is very successful at her job and has increased sales dramatically. in poland at one point. this is great for her and i am glad she is doing so well in her job but in my mind she is peddling death. and i have problems wishing her well in this.
im not going to equate the health issues of eating too much fast food with smoking but the dangers undeniably exist. obesity and diabetes, both linked to fast food, is a significant concern throughout america and LA city council has recently acknowledged this and banned the sale of it in poorer areas. quite rightly so
lets not find excuses for fast food.
they might well be a great employer in america, but does this outweigh the harm they are doing
