Mermaid (syrena) - the symbol of Warsaw

Anyone who knows Warsaw, knows that the symbol of Warsaw is a Mermaid. There is alot of history/myth surrounding this particular aspect of Warsaw, however, my point is... do they exist? Do you feel, that somewhere into the unseen depths of the oceans ... there lies a civilization. There lies a species, or a kind ... called the Syren! ... or as we more commonly know... "The Mermaid"!.

However, this thread cannot begin without the picture of the mythical protector of Warsaw..

Though, infact this Mermaid (according to legend) is not Polish. According to the most famour legend, she is actually the younger of the two mermaid sisters who came from the Danish coast (so, in a way, they are Danish). The younger sister fell in love with a brave Polish warrior... but on him being killed by the Swedish, she took sword and shild to defend the city in her beloved's place.

Anyways, according to legend, Mermaids are very beautiful, and the first Mermaid concept was brough forward by the Babylonians (modern day Iraq). However, Mermens are not very attractive to them. Mermaids are by nature very curious. They are adventurous. They are girly girls :D ... but they can be mean! They often tried to enchant fishermen, and according to some legends, specially foreign fishermen who would please their eyes and make the mermaids dream! However, they would enchant these fishermen with their song, only to hold them so tightly that they would be squeezed to death! Or, the Mermaid would take hold of one sailor/fisherman and swim deep into the sea... forgetting that humans cannot breath under water.

They are also known to be bad omens for sailors...

In all its legend and myth.... the mermaid still lives. To some its still a possibility... to others a beautiful dream :).

Do you believe in Mermaids? ... would you want to meet one? ;) ...
