A bit of an unusual request but here goes:

I live in England and want to buy a computer for my Polish girl friend in Lodz, Poland. I have to buy in Poland for the operating system to be in Polish (not available in the UK). I have found the computer I want to get it is a HP IQ 770. I checked out the HP website but it is unclear if this is available in Poland.

Would anyone have an knowledge - any help would be very much appreciated.

There is for sure plenty of shops where you come in with money , tell what hardware config you want and guys compose PC for you, with full warranty. Its usually cheaper and you can have your own setup...

If you mean the ''crossfire'' I can't find it. But it doesn't mean it ain't here.

Can't you buy it in the UK and then load it with Polish version Vista.

This post could show that I know nowt about computers.

I bought a Dell Laptop in the U.S. for use in Poland. It works just fine for her. She doesn't have all the letters, but it's not a problem for a her. My advice, send her the money so she can buy one.

Warning.....Vista can be a pain in the ass.

I know very little about computers but I had a good computer which 'died on me'. I was recommended to but a Dell computer which I ordered over the telephone through a call centre in India and which was manufactured in Ireland. It seems to work fine and I am very happy with it, especially as it has a posh flat screen. However, I am finding that almost all of my language courses are not compatible and do not work and even after hours of trying. A nice computer and operating system but you may need to buy new disks, scanners and printers.

Hi I have just brought a new laptop from this online shop in Poland and the service was great .komputronik.pl/ personaly I would not go with windows vista yet as it is still full of bugs. As with buying it in Poland I have done a search and cannot find HP IQ 770. anywhere, one option is to get the computer in the UK and send it over and then buy the Polish XP system in Poland, and why do you want it in Polish anyway if she cam speak and read English she should be able to understand the English version :O)

Her English is Ok and she is learning, her computer skills are basic so it would make sense for her to learn how to use a computer with a language she is totally familiar with (Not have to keep looking in a dictionary to find out what a word means)

Win 2000/NT,

They stopped producing Updates for Win2000 a couple of years ago.
I'd sudgest Windows Xp.
Its the most user friendly. And more compatible with Hardware and software.
And can be installed easily Over 98.
Regular updates keep the system running ok.

Then switch to Vista Later. When all the bugs have been ironed out..

You Can request when buying a New system That it Comes with Xp.
And i dont see why you cant just use the language bar to add Polish to the list of chosen languages.

Goto ( Start, Settings, Control panel. Select regional and language options.)
In Languages. Click Details. Add. And look for your Chosen Input Language
And look on the List for Polish. Add it, Select your Keyboard Language.
Apply.

And Hey Presto....... :)
It puts an Icon on the start bar.
That way you can switch between English(Or any other) And Polish.

no problem, I have the older systems installation disks, so I don't need updates :)
And I simply didn't like Win XP (I had it maybe 3 yrs ago), so I formatted the disk and decided to install Win98 again - I'm just a conservative user, and my comp serves me mostly for work, so close to a typing machine.

Sorry mate this is not true, this only changes regional language and time and other bits, but not the operating system, believe me I know about this as I format my computer at least 3 times a year just to keep it clean and I had to get an English version of XP from the UK, because I live in Poland. You can change vista operating system language during installing it but not XP.

I have a new laptop I bought in the U.S. before I moved to Poland, with Windows Vista. I have to agree the Vista OS has bugs and you're better starting with XP. I've worked through the bugs but it's taken some time. The laptop is an HP, "17" and my first. I use FTM for genealogy,Paint Shop Pro and a few other softwares that wouldn't work on Vista until i searched for solutions. Stay with XP until the bugs are out of Vista.
