I know there are quite a few threads about food.

I was thinking about new one- Could we send here some recipes for polish dishes- but some more family ones. I mean which we have from our friend, neighbour, grandmoter....

And we tried them, we like them and they are delicious.
I thought it could be so useful as each of us can try to do some of them at home.

wozzy,

I will try to translate it in the best way.

150g of flour
150 g of sugar
150 g of butter ( melted)
3 eggs
50g of cocoa powder
1 flat teaspon of baking powder.

for glaze
250g of icing sugar
2-3 spoon of water
2-3 spoon of rum
( more less )

Butter melt add sugar ,flour, cocoa, baking powder egg yolks and in the end - whipped egg whites.
put into form , bake for about 15 minutes.( 150C)in preheated oven.

take out and put glaze on it.

to make glaze put icing sugar into bowl add water and rum ( better more rum it has better aromat) - mix together to make it soft but densy.

if put hot on the cake it melts more and move equally.

really quick and nice.

Smacznego:)

I am looking for a recipe for a dessert my grandmother used to make. She was Lithuanian, she called them Krustai. I know the polish name, but don't know how to spell it. They are bow shaped dough, deep fried, powdered sugar.

What kind of recipe do you want? Polish, German, Italian, American? I cook alot! Maybe some good old American fried chicken and potato salad?

Polish will be best :). You don't have to have any culinary skills to make a fried chicken, do you.

Actually, maybe I'll have my Swedish friend, Ingrid, post her Glurg recipe!

Since I went apple picking on Sunday, I'll be baking all day tomorrow. I'm going to make some apple crisp. Here's the recipe:

4 cups sliced apples
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/3 cup flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup rolled oats (oatmeal)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup melted butter

Put apples in a shallow 8 inch pan. Sprinke with lemon juice. Combine all dry ingredients with butter and mix until crumbly. Sprink all this over apples and bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes.

YUMMY! Then I'll make some pork chops with apple walnut stuffing!

You don't have to have any culinary skills to make a fried chicken, do you.

You do if you don't want to eat pink chicken and get food poisoning! Besides, it's all in how you make the coating. SECRET ingredients!

Apple crisps, sound nice.

What are these rolled oats? Do you buy them in the pack ?

Rolled oats are raw oatmeal. In the USA it is in a cardboard box.

Yeh I remember them , a shortcrust pastry deep fried Mum called them "Krustki"..All those calories mmm.

It's called either "chrust" -( say " hroost") or "faworki" (favors):
4 egg yolks
3 heaping tblsp of sour cream
2 tblsp rum or brandy
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
11/4 cups flour
oil for deep frying
confectioner's sugar

Combine egg yolks, sour cream, rum, vanilla. Mix in flour. If dough too stiff, add more sour cream. Knead dough about 10 minutes. Roll out dough as thin as possible. Cut into 5x2-inch strips. Make a 2-inch slit from center almost to one end of each strip, then pull opposite end through slit. Repeat with remaining dough. Fry in hot oil until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with confectioner's sugar. Makes about 2.1/2 dozen

Oh my gosh, I think I just found the clue to my Polish ancestry in the Krustki listed here.

My "Italian" great grandmother made these, as did her daughter, my grandmother. So did my mom, her daughter.

I have long thought great grandma was half Polish ( I suspect her mother's maiden name was americanized to Swetcuse from Swiatchowska or similar ).

Now I know.

These are POLISH cookies. They always told me they were Italian when I asked. But the Italian kind are not the same, very different dough.

And this is exactly what they made, exactly. And they only made them at Christmastime.
