Sending SMS messages without using Polish characters

When texting someone in Polish my phone doesn't support accented and special characters. What is the convention here, do you just use the un-accented version? Are there any pitfalls where doing this could completely confuse/upset someone? I remember the first text message I sent to my beloved I had to find a phrase without any special characters in it, not something I can keep on doing!

The only polish letter ive got on my phone is ó ;). When i got my Dad a mobile phone in UK he had Polish added to the languages available on his phone (it only cost about 20 z³. in Poland) and now all his menu is Polish and he has Polish characters on it. Im not sure if they can do it for you in UK but ask around or check on the internet etc. And why worry so much about not being able to use Polish letters, chill out im sure your loved ones will understand what u were saying...

Hopefully! I will look into getting the language added to my phone. I'm a stickler for correct spelling

Some people are allergic to using commas, apostrophes and even a sufficiency of vowels in the texting I am familiar with. I like correctness, but it does seem the special characters are not necessarily necessary.

Alas, my luck was only partial. I didn't ruin my phone, but on the other hand I didn't succeed in getting a Polish character set. Strangely I now have Turkish characters available.

Don't forget that even if You can put some polish letters, mobile operator counts them as 2-3 letters. If You use loads of them, this may reduce number of words you can write....
Personally - I do not use oolish letters in SMS, beacause some phones/operators do not support them, and, besides, no one cares - we do understand SMS without polish letters like ó,¿,æ,d¿ etc...

i seriously dont think that is true, about counting ó,æ,ê etc. as 2-3 letters. when i use ó on my phone it counts it as one letter. dunno about the smileys, i suppose if your phone makes them look like actual little yellow faces, it counts them as 2-3 letters depending on how many characters u used to make them. u know, like :) thats 2 characters.
