Warsaw - A Polish burglar had to ask the police to save him after an axe-wielding night watchman attacked and chased him until he crashed his vehicle.

The watchman in the western city of Katowice took the 25-year-old burglar by surprise after he had broken into a house, hitting him three times in the head with the blunt end of an axe, cracking his skull, Polish media reported on Thursday.

"The dizzy burglar fled to his automobile and managed to lock the door and start the engine," a police spokesperson told PAP news agency.

The watchman gave chase, shattered the driver-side window and yanked the steering wheel, sending the van, which was starting to accelerate, into a mound of dirt.

Trapped, the burglar phoned police for help.

A court will now determine whether the watchman's actions went beyond self-defence and constituted a crime, PAP said.

The burglar's head injuries were not life threatening. He faces 10 years in jail for breaking and entering, while the watchman could face eight years in jail if charged with fighting with a deadly weapon.

I don't agree that the watchman should have to do any time. Is this common law in Poland? In the US, if someones in your house, you have the right to self defense.

True, but once they leave your property don't chase after them and continue to beat them (or their vehicle) because then they can sue you for assault and damages!

I would risk that Especially if they have my belongings.

Here here!
Still, if you have a gun (as many in the US do), why not get some legitamate target practice?
A short (but accurate) burst of automatic fire should do nicely!

We have waaay too many guns here. I'd rather a more painful approach

Okay then. What you need is a super sized baseball bat with nails/studs in
Wielded enthusiastically, the suffering and fear of your tresspasser will be quite electric and satisfying

What happened to my post about the basketball players getting jumped in Warsaw? Did you happen to see it somewhere?

The above technique will definitely do the trick.

In the US, if a criminal trips over something in your house while in the process of robbing you and breaks his leg, you are responsible for damages to the criminal.

If someone trespasses on your property and is attacked by your dog and you don't have a BEWARE OF DOG sign, you are responsible for damages caused by the dog.

Dumb dumb dumb.

Yes I think its the same here in the UK. If a burglar gets hurt while he/she is in your house they can then sue you for damages, or least they can try!

I wouldn't know whether to hit them or not just incase I got arrested!

That's why you need to have insurance. And that's why insurance companies have the most money.
A guy was buying a horse from me one time and he fell off and hurt himself. The first thing his wife asked is if we have insurance.
My son got bit by a dog on someone's property. Their insurance company had to cover the costs even though my health insurance would cover them. But since the accident happened on their property, not only did their rates go up but they also had to destroy the dog.
That's the law.

what the hecks a night watchmen doing armed with an AXE, this isnt bloomin Braveheart, why not a billy club or CS spray? as it reads the guy sounds a bit of a psychopath and deserves some punishment, 8 years compared to the robbers 10 does seem a tad stiff though.
Im all for home defence and would follow the advice of a policeman mate of mine to do whatever it took to stay safe and worry about the consequences later. Another tip was that if I went for "him" (hypothetical burgler) with a baseball bat I would probably get locked up,cricket bat, probably not. For the simple reason being a brit it is hard to prove I had any sporting use of said baseball bat but a criket bat might "just have been lying around handy"
