Corruption on many levels.

Old-fashioned business laws that hinder development and promote bureaucracy.

Lack of confidence in their abilities is a problem.
Poles are often educated and have the neccessary cultural
background to fit in Anglo-saxon business practices but
seem to doubt their own abilties.

I think this is changing though as I see more and more Poles
in office jobs rather than manual ones.

Another problem is that Polish men really need to stop
cutting their own hair.

And ban moustaches.

I could mention a few thing here. One of the worst things about Poland and the Poles is that they never accept responsibility for anything. It does not matter what it is, they always find an external force to blame. In my day it was always Churchill who was responsible for the Russians or the weather! The Polish never have any financial common sense. They never think about tomorrow and know how to save and invest. They also have very little civil pride in themselves, a quick view of modern day Poland shows you that! The Poles are a very jealous people. They moan when they have nothing themselves yet are the biggest snobs when they start to move up the property ladders! they are big church goers which surprises me as there is nothing Christian about them. They will come out of church on a Sunday from a church service and walk right a dying man in the street! It is always well known in the countryside that the Roman Catholic priest drives the best German motor car in town! There is so much I could say here but I would be repeating myself. There are a lot of dishonest people there too-watch out for your wallet! They will steal anything not nailed down!

Yes, I agree, they seem to be obsessed by the church as if it will give them all the answers!

Michal,

As usual. I disagree with [your] post #10

Your profile of Polish people might fit the older generation, but certainly not the younger one.

low level of life

I have heard that life expectancy is falling in Poland at the moment. I noticed when visiting grave yards in Poland that many old people who were alive at the time of say, the First World War, had long lives but I notice that among those born around the 1950's life is very short. My friends lived in Gdansk next to the huge cemetery there (near Orunia) and I went for a walk-row after row of young dead men, almost like a military cemetery, all their dates of birth were after mine even.

Interesting, I never thought in that way, comparing current level and lenght of lives from the past. I was more thinking about level of lives in EU currently. Poles have wages about 4 times less than western countries of EU and we have prices of flats and homes in big cities higher than in Berlin, one of most expensive "electric drift" (sorry dont know the proper word in english) in EU, as well as petrol and cars, not to mention the highest taxes, which take 40% of our wages brutto.

It appears to me they are getting the grants etc but they need experienced business- minded folk to manage it. Why they can't "do an Ireland" and drop the base rate for business tax. If Ireland can do it on the edge of Europe surely Poland can do it, look at the logistics for distribution, networking etc - ideal !

I believe you :-) In my opinion position of church is too high. Today church is involved in everything in Poland, including politics which isn't good...

Believe none of it, the church, the bible, the preachers, their simply following something that was written by a bunch of people who were board and decided to write a story book. Its the same for all religion, its for people who feel they need guidance instead of directing htemselves

Another big problem - Poland is losing its own identity and copies too much from the western, "plastic" cultures (consumption, relativism). As the pope Benedict said, Poland is now in a big danger of becoming a country of non-believers who believe only in materialistic stuff (similar to Czech people).

Poland does not need faith in any god to make itself better it needs to deal with real life problems and concerns :)
