Manchester - Question - living standard for Polish migrants.

Hi, Iam a polish professional currently living in london. I got a better job position in manchester where I haven't been ever. Can You tell me how safe is there for Polish people. Is it the same dangerous as in other British/Irish towns. Can I go to a pub there and avoid being beeten etc..? How much antagonisticly for Polish migrants manchester people are. And could you tell me which area is the most safe for Polish blokes and which area is nice to live in general. robert

There's a lot of second, third generation polish descent people iin Manchester and the surrounding area's. Sale, Altrincham, Chorlton, Didsbury are good places where you will meet other Polish people. There are area's just out of the City Centre which aren't the best of places. I don't want to name them as I do not wish to offend anyone. I'm sure there are other good places around Manchester but I can't comment on them because it's been a long time since I was there. Depends a lot on what you are looking for ? Best is to do a bit of research and look around. See if they are places you would like to live in. If you want any advice once you find an area, I'm quite happy to give you my opinion (for what it is worth).

let me ask you is the money really that better then Poland ? that make you go there and live in fear of been beat up ??? becouse is clear that you are scare that why you ask !!! Places like Prestwich (as I have said on other threads) is a nice area so is Whitefield, so is Simister Village. Also some very good catholic schools in the Prestwich area if you are coming with a family Please feel free to mail me if you want any advice.

Thank you for your answers, Basicly why Im asking is that ie. in City of London there is absolutely safe and nothing to be scare of. And in london in general too - because of such many people form all over the world. But if You go to some smaller towns the situation changes drastically. Ie. in Belfast they can burn you car or even whole flat while you sleep inside. And police don't give a dam. Maybe they burn flats independent of weather you're form Poland or other countries Idon't know? I just know that this are the facts because I've spoken to people which seen it. So that's why Iam asking if in manchester is like in belfast or like in London. And answer for good zion's question: There is no money wich makes sens live in constant fear. That's why Im living in lnd where is save and not going to go to belfast. /cheers

London Underground is a bit grim isn't it ? Manchester's metro is newer and mostly at ground level. It's not the same as London Underground. It is cleaner. It looks good as it wends it's way through the City Centre. I have to admit i've never been on the metro. Over to Amethyst :)

Historically, it was always viewed as a poorer relation to Manchester. Housing stock was poor, people were poorer than other places in the North West. The Area got regenerated, and now there are large parts that are good places to live. It houses the Imperial War Museum, The Lowry Centre and the BBC have chosen Salford to relocate too. BUT, there are still certain area's around Salfods where you need to be careful :( Manchester and surrounding area's have gone through and are still undergoing massive regeneration. This has changed certain area's for the better.

I would imagine the crime rate in London is far higher than in Manchester. Manchester is the same as London, very multi cultural. But as in all area's (London included) there are unsafe area's, not just unsafe for foreigners but also people who live here. I used to work in London and Manchester and it's a lot safer in Manchester., believe me. It's a nicer pace here in the North West and the people are much friendlier. I live outside Manchester and the local Police Force are learning some Polish so that they can interface better with Polish immigrants. My parents were both Polish. I think the secret is to avoid the rough area's in any City Centre in the UK.

I've worked in Belfast too........and I can't identify with the remarks you have made about the lawlessness there.......doesn't sound true !!

I read about it in newspapers, Some 4 peple were living in belfast and somebody set up a fire in their house at night. Sombebody was burnt someone else escaped tru the window. I also fly quite often to Gdansk form Luton and people form belfast fly tru luton to gdansk. And I have sat whith young (21 years old) girl once, whose car has been burnt. Parking in the city centre is about £7 perday, parking in front of your house is free. You'll like Manchester, lots of lovely parks and close to the Lake District and not too far from the Peak District if you like walking. Public transport is good and traffic can be quite bad getting in to the city (early start and late finish stops this problem though). Manchester has a lot to offer, hence the reason a lot of people from the south are moving here. Ive lived here all my life and love my city and very proud of it.

Don't know how much it is these days. But public transport is pretty good so it's probably better to park a bit further out then either walk in or use the metro, buses, trains etc You don't usually pay to park outside your house but it does depend where it is. If there are yellow lines outside the house you will be restricted.

I think that is because there has been so much in the press about recent Polish immigrants. It's been on TV, in the newspapers and became quite a talking point. It will die down........I wouldn't worry too much :) But i wouldn't live or socialise in the rougher area's of any city as some people can be quite ignorant. I would imagine that's true of any place in any country ?

I live 20 mins from Manchester and can only reaffirm what others have said. The North West has a large Polish community and Poles have easily integrated into the community. You will have no problems.

I think they were joking a about another Pole just got off the plane, in the context that there are suddenly Polish everywhere, which is funny. I don't think someone scared to 'lose their maintenance job' would be laughing about it.

Hi.. rtd5rtd I was born in manchester. And have allways felt safe. it is a great place to live. Town is very Busy.. But a great place to work. Stay away from Hulme.. Or Moss side. ( Very tough ) If you want to contact me. I can tell try to help. It allways amazes me why everyone thinks London.. is the answer to everything. Its not. Its way too expensive. Dirty and busy. Manchester. is the place to be. its growing fast.. :))

I'm sure you'll love Manchester, much more so than London. My wife is Polish and visited both many times, she definitely prefers Manchester! I'd really like to help you also, as I went the other way, from Manchester to Warsaw! My Polish friends who have joined me in MCR also love it. Also, your Pound will go a lot further in MCR than in London, so if the job offer is better, I wouldn't hesitate. Good luck with whatever you decide.
