There are so many Americans of such diverse ethnic backgrounds, beliefs, attitude, opinions, experiences, etc. that I think it would be a gross exaggeration to say that Americans feel one way or the other about Poles. Like anywhere else, there are decent, intelligent, nice people and there are total jerks. I personally don't know anyone prejudice against Poles though. Many of my generation were actually somewhat inspired by your 'revolution' or Solidarity Movement, that started in Gdansk. I remember in college, we all were glued to the news about it.

im 100 percent polish american, third or 4th generation here depending which side of the familly tree you want to follow. except for a occasional polish joke, the u.s. is a great place. i tell you, if you want to make friends here real fast. make polish food and invite your nieghbors. nothing gets people friendlier than kielbasa or pierogis. l.o.l. i laugh but its true. kaz

Congratulations.

He was the first the first generation Polish American in my family and he was a comedian... lol..

Most jokes including nationality are interchangeable. Most I've heard start out: " A pollack, a Mexican, and a Rabi....."

Unfortunately, I am of both Polish and Mexican ancestory....

Regardless, it's all as harmless as the Pollack who took a car door with him on a hike across the Sahara... Just in case he got hot, he could roll down the window...

i know this is (american attitude toward Poland) but what about Germans how to they see the Polish. We have a german foreign exchange student and all she did today in class is talk about how polish people are snobs, they steal, they are ugly. She tried making us sound like all polish people are horrible. she also said that other european countries hate poland. So i was just wondering if the germans feel like that or is it just some people.

It's hard to say how many people are of the same opinion as the girl you mentioned. However I would say that there are definitely more anti-polish Germans than pro-polish. The last 200 years of our co-existence were rather troublesome, to put it in a most soft way. Although Germany is a totally different country now, some imaginations remained in their inhabitants, squashed deep down inside them. Many won't say this out loud, but they feel superior to Poles, just as their fathers felt, and their fathers fathers, and their fathers fathers fathers...

I have a question for you Sylvia. Why did she brought up the topic about Poland? Did she triggered it herself or it was just a reaction for someone’s question?
Sylvia   Jan 29, 07, 19:36 /  #
I take a sewing class at school adn the teacher also taught my brother, the class is mandatory for the younger students, but i was in the middle of a conversation with my teacher. I was telling her that my brother told me he didnt need to take a sewing class because he was going to marry a Polish woman and she's probably know how to do it. My parents are both from Poland so he see's that my mother is a housewife and does everything so he assumes that thats what his wife will do. Right after I told my teacher what my brother had said, the foreign exchange student turned around and just said "I hate Polish people." I never had a conversation with her in my life and I was shocked that she actually said that. She then continued to say how Polsih people are thieves and will steal anything from you. I don't think so knew I was polish at that point in time, so she went on for about 10 mins. I finally got pissed off and went up to her and said "I'm Polish and I have never stolen anything in my Life". But she just continued to say Polish people steal, and that no one in Europe likes us.

I would tell you some advice, but dont want you to get in trouble doing it.
So I will refrain from my first thoughts and go to the second thoughts.

Ignore her sorry little butt.

as much as I know what my reactions are, and more then likely you had same
feeling, ignore.

Hey, I'm a Pole living in Erie,PA and there are the occasional racists who hate anyone who might get their job, but other than that its us Polish becoming good friends with everyone adn showing them how to really party.

I actually feel superior to Germans...

I lived in Germany on study abroad. If a German ever told me something bad about Poland, I always reminded them that we are a democtratic and freedom loving people. (Unlike the Germans) We have always fought for freedom and and the ideals of the EU.

Germans really don't have much to same after you remind them about that. hahaha

The only reason Poland is poorer than Germany is becuause they ruined our country in WWII and then Churchhill and FDR sold us out to Joey Stalin.

So if the Germans ever talk smack about how Poland is not up to par, you should remind them that they should go back and replace every brick in beautiful Warsaw. Germans should be kissing our ass for not demanding more reparations.

This is a dumb topic by the way... The sentiment in the US towards Polish people is 99% positive.

Best remedy here would be to remind her of the Holacaust... That shuts Germans up in an instance. hahaha

Exactly. Polish people have a good reputation here unlike other immigrant groups. All you will ever hear is someone make a dumb Polish joke once in a while, but Poles will be welcomed into neighborhoods with open arms.

"Unfortunately, I am of both Polish and Mexican ancestory...."

Is that Mexican ancestry Spanish Mexican? Because if you are an Indian or mestizo Mexican you most likely do not look Polish and me and many other people do not consider you Polish. It would be like Halle Berry going to England and saying she's English because her mom was. She'd just get stares and people not believing her.

Big deal, why oh why are people so concerned with the superficialities of the epidermis?
Using the word mestizo, mulato to a hispanic is like using the n-gg-r word. It is extremely offensive and racist.

Mexicans consider themselves Mexican. Color is irrelevant. That's why hispanics of different colors have no problem with each other. I hope the Poles here understand this point. Hispanics use color as an afterthought. It seems that many humans don't feel the same way.

I personally don't think Mexicans and African Americans look alike. Mexicans who are mixed with European don't look like Halle Barry who is part African American. They can blend in with Polish people easy. I saw a guy whose mother was Mexican and whose father was Polish and he had stunning blue eyes and extremely pale skin. Not even some Polish people look like that.

Mexican ancestry. From Chihuahua Mexico to be exact. My brother and I definitely have European features. My sister was fortunate enough to get the olive skin dark hair and brown eyes. She highly resembles Jennifer Garner. If Patrick Swazy and David Duchovny had a love child, that would be me... Only taller, heavier, and with blue eyes... Damn good looking if I do say so myself Now that I'm divorcing, I get a lot of beautiful women as well... My brother got the polish nose...Bad for him, good for me! I have to say that I never burn in the sun and get a great tan, though ...

As far as being considered Polish or not, I can care less what others or you think. However small the percentage may be, genetics don't lie. We have so many different people from all over the world here in So Cal, that being born and raised here we grow up accepting people for who and what they are.

I don't think the term is equal to that of the word nigg_r . N_gger is much more derogatory IMHO...

The irony is that I joined this site because I was excited to learn a little about where my ancestors came from as well as learn about Polish people and their views. It has now become rather discouraging. I guess ya have to take the good with the bad.

Today I met a mason and his apprentice who are Polish. They were building pillars for some entry gates around the corner from here. It appears that they do good work quickly at a very good rate. I wonder if he has the same views as "peace" does.... He stands to make a pretty profit off me. I think I'll use the young and eager Italian/Mexican kid who bid a little more instead... Thanks peace, ya just cost me an extra 1700.00usd

I assume you are caucasion, Roz, so you really don't have a right to tell someone of another race what is more offensive. It's all a matter of perspective.
