WHAT ABOUT THANKSGIVING (ŚWIĘTO DZIĘKCZYNIENIA) IN POLAND?

Considering all the American-style celebrations being forced down Poland's throat--Valentine's, Halloween, US-style St Patrick's Day, garden dwarf (Sandy Clutz)Christmas--why is so little being done to promoter the most beautiful and meaningful of American occasions: Thanskgiving Day? It is the one American holiday similar to Wigilia in that people gather with their loved ones to thank God for their blessings. Is it because its marketing potential is limited (only turkeys!)?

Turkey is rather bland....:-)
I don't think that thnksgiving will be ever celebrated in Poland.
But what about our old tradition like 'dozynki'?

If Poles have a similar holiday as you said, why should we adopt Thanksgiving?

But what about our old tradition like 'dozynki'?

Yes, dożynki or Harvest Festival is a nice holiday...

while this is true.

St. Patrick wasn't a Polish saint who banished snakes from Ireland. Yet some still celebrate St. Patrick's Day... in the Irish fashion.

I agree, why are they trying to force it on you?

Made up by Hallmark to get your money!

Halloween, US-style St Patrick's Day,

Good times big parties:)

I think Valentine's is in the Polish church calendar... just not celebrated in the Hallmark tradition.

St. Valentines has a strong British history/tradition. Centuries old.

American-style celebrations being forced down Poland's throat

Poland rips them away from America. In fact, Poles don't even celebrate American Holidays properly.
For example Valentine's Day in the US is celebrating your loved ones, including your husband, children, parents. In Poland they got it all wrong because guys seem you only have to buy sweets for a woman.

Not these days. Red roses are essential.

Not wrong but adapted to our needs, Triger. We already have Polish holidays on which we pay respect to our family, so St. Valentine`s Day was adopted as a festival for people in love because it was missing in Polish culture.

I am American and lived a lot of my life there...and you are wrong. Valentine's Day in the US is about your woman or man as well.

Merged: Poland should celebrate Thanksgiving Too!

THe Polish people have much to be thankful for! People forget and need to be reminded. Have people forgotten Hitler and other terrible living conditions and political conflicts as well as the poverty and the working conditions and so on.

They have Polish independence day which they have just celebrated and they have plenty of other celebrations throughout the year, why take on an American one, Europeans have their own.

I am just wondering waht the thought is of having one day to encompass many events. Poland currently has so many individual celebrations Mainly excuse to do much drinking it seems.

who?

That is a more realistic answer than one might think!

Thanksgiving is an American Holiday cant we just leave it at that, it was about the Pilgrims getting together with the Indians and being thankfull for a bountifull harvest, and the tradition carried on.

They have Polish independence day which they have just celebrated and they have plenty of other celebrations throughout the year, why take on an American one, Europeans have their own.

Exactly, there are American Poles that celebrate Polish Independence day and we even have parades, but its not a national holiday.

Have people forgotten Hitler

No... but he has nothing to do with Thanksgiving:)

Thanksgiving may not be the best as to call it as in its relation to the US holliday. However, Why not a national holliday encompassing all that has been accomplishe d over the years. Not just Independence. I think you will see where I am going here?

Why? Like I said we have our traditions and holidays in Europe and you have your traditions and USA...let's just leave it at that..

That is a more realistic answer than one might think!

Why bring Hitler into a thread about wanting to push some American holiday on to Polish people?

Because as an american it is my Duty to solve the worlds problems!

Hitler into a thread about wanting

I fear future generations are going to forget the reality of who this bastard was.

Now that was funny!

I fear future generations are going to forget the reality of who this bastard was.

I fear you are a very stupid person then! Maybe future mexicans whoops sorry Americans won't know who is he because you don't learn our history...but be sure of one thing all future generations in Europe will remember!

I can't quite fathom why are you talking about accomplishments and Thanksgiving. Do you know about the history of Thanksgiving in the US? About the only thing the colonists accomplished that year was in that they gladly accepted the help of the local natives.

They killed them the next year.

Because as an american it is my Duty to solve the worlds problems!

Taking care of American problems first would be a good start ;)

I honestly do not think they will. The Educators will eventually put other events in front and older events will get less emphasis. DId the Brits remember what happened when they ruled Iraq? ANd then they join the US in another effort. Results will be the same!

Why should Poland be celebrating US holidays? I think they have plenty of holidays, where everyone is off from work, offices closed, etc.

I wish we had that many days off from work, like they do in Poland. All the religious & non-religious holidays, that people have off from work in PL, are probably more than all my vacation time.

Maybe you can work on recognizing these PL holidays in the US, so we can get a couple extra days off!

If you lived in America you could celebrate
Polish Indpendence day
St, Patricks day
Columbus day
oktoberfest
cinco de mayo..they wont make these holidays though
