Moving to Gdansk. Tuition, community, apartments questions

Hi All,

My Story:

My interest in Poland (I'm from the UK) comes from dating a girl from Czestochowa for 3 years or so, we are no longer together but I've been to Poland many times in that time period and love going there.

I'm a bit fed up with my current situation and later this year intend to move to Gdansk for 6 months to spend some time developing a few business ideas and learning Polish.

I have a side business online which generates around $1000 a month at present which I'll use as income with my savings in reserve should that drop off at any time.

My Polish is basic at the moment but I can get by in most situations.

Questions:

I've a couple of questions that someone can hopefully answer:

1) Has anyone had experience of Polish tuition in the Gdansk area or can recommend lessons via Skype that kind of thing? one on one learning would be ideal if not classes would suit me fine.

2) Ex-pat community in Gdansk, are there any social kind of events or just a case of finding likewise people on forums such as these.

3) I've been looking at apartments to rent for 6 month periods online and most of the decent ones seem to be around 2000zl a month, my knowledge of the Gdansk real estate market is not great and only comes from websites.. does this seem about right for a nice apartment or a little too much? anywhere else I can look e.g. local papers etc?

Any advice would be great, thanks in advance

Trade English lessons for Polish lessons.

Something I'd consider yes, I'd prefer someone qualifed to teach me though so me offering English in return might not be suitable.

Good idea though, thanks.

theyre there... just like most places... the expat community varies grealty... see if you can meet glenn in papryka on a wednesday night... he's an american and is good at making introductions... but lets face it... why limit yourself to hanging out with expats...?

in most areas of gdansk/sopot this is at the higher end of the scale and will get you something pretty nice... check out this site for a better idea

bubba has a point. Hanging with ex-pats won't teach you Polish.

Hello, I've got a flat ready to rent around beginning off may. However, it is not in Gdansk its in Wejherowo, which is outside the tri-city, but within 20 mintues drive of Gdynia, 30 mintues from Sopot and 40 m minutes from Gdansk approx. There is a decent rail link from Wejherowo to all three places. The flat is 30m2 new build will furnished and around 1200zl per month. mail me if interested.

Just checked this out and it looks very interesting.

Especially the 15 week course which would give me 3 months to get going and then evaluate. Anyone been here? can recommend this?

I think you would really enjoy the Tri-city area. i'm relocating very soon over there from london.

The thing which my missus and i were thinking is unless you have family working on your premises or that you pay a really top wage. Or you actually work the site yourself, there would be too much pilfering from the tills.
Having said that, over the summer months that little place in the correct location would definately rock.

Go to a city like Gdansk and look at the outskirts and see what a dump the place is and how many billions of dollars will be needed to even sart to put the place right before starting to worry about simple words in context.

gdansk old town is indeed picture perfect... but a hell of a lot of the city is ugly as sin... same goes for gdynia, reda, rumia etc etc

lets just face it... there was a certain period in the not too distant history of poland when architecture just went to pot... doesnt seem as tho this period has really ended either... which is puzzling...

Like 1960's England.... what were planners thinking. Gdansk has satelitites of old grey communist blocks, however, many new estates are being built and they aren't so ruff.

poland and the olish have always stuck me as a very design conscious and competent nation... i mean... look at the gaudiesque edifice they have put up on Monte Casino... one of a kind!

but overall, this national talent doesnt seem to transfer itself well to much of what has been built in recent years... so many of the new buildings remain unimaginative boxes...
