Hey everyone. I am studying the possibilities of living in Poland. As everyone knows, we have know everything about the country before we accept this new idea. I've researching the web, but still I have no answers to some questions... Anyway, would anyone help me, preferably someone that has passed through the same things... - is food cheap or expensive? breakfast, lunch, meal and dinner (how much $? - clothing, for the cold climate - cheap? how cold is it? - transportation - international license ? renting car or buying? in krakow, is everything far or close (e.g. supermarket, bakery, fastfoods, malls) - bank account (howtos) - social security number (howtos) - general expenses like entertainment (what is there to do?) - rental ? Well... Help me out.>!

gleite: would anyone help me, preferably someone that has passed through the same things... Krakow is definitely a great option for everything including work,entertainment etc . If you don't have Polish friends yet or contacts who may help and if your Polish is not enough I recommend you hire a bilingual Polish student for helping you to set up your bank account etc. It creates a small job and it is efficient .

It now all depends on if you are going to have a good job or not too. I was in Warsaw four years ago and a daily bus ticket cost 2zl. 70 and there were 6zl 40 to the pound. A few weeks ago I was back for my birthday and the same ticket now costs 9zl and the rate is 3zl 80 to the pound. Books are dreadfully expensive too. I was in a main book shop in Warsaw on my last day and a book cost 147zl. If you think about the exchange rate the same book would cost less in England. The good old days of a cheap Poland are long since gone.

Hi there....I am an Englishman living in Poland...if there is anything i can help you with just ask....I have been living here a few years now , so can tell you all about the good the bad and the ugly....I have no intention of returning to the UK , so i guess that tells you i don,t regret moving here....

Hi, i can say that the prices are quit cheaper than other EU countries like france, germany ect.... and depend of course what city you'r going to stay I was in gdansk and gdynia, renting a flat is very expesive !

In England you can study almost anything and then still change your mind by doing another postgraduate course and almost completely changing direction. I know for a fact, that the Poles are quite envious of our open plan education system as in Poland it is where, once you study on an education faculty for example, that is it, its your lot-you are a teacher 'fair and square' to the end of your days, there is no going back or changing career direction as in England. I know of a physics graduate from the University of surrey who went on to specialize in social work and became a seniour probation officer-that sort of thing simply does not happen in Poland.

Again Michal you inflict us with your dinosaurian views on a modern Poland, many have repeated this before, and you really should not use a minority value as a generalisation. A prime example.... But whatever anyone says you will disagree with the and stick to your outdated views. To the poster don't listen to me, for god sake don't listen to Michal; come to Poland and spend a couple of months here travailing around the country and speak to people first hand. Then you will have a much more balanced view of the country :)

I think that many years ago, when prices were cheap, it might have been worth the while going to Poland but I am not sure today. If Poland was such an easy country 'to make' in, why are there so many intelligent and well educated but struggling young Polish people in England working long hours for low pay? There must be something wrong with Poland. As for education, England is still great with a wealth of various opportunities. Poland is better? I am not sure about that either.

Michal: If Poland was such an easy country 'to make' in, why are there so many intelligent and well educated but struggling young Polish people in England working long hours for low pay? And I think you will find that most of these Polish people have a basic education, which will not provide them with the same opportunities as in the UK. Almost all of the Polish friends that I know of in the UK of University education are very successful in finding very well paid jobs, admittedly at first they will take a job to find their feet but soon move on to better jobs. And I am British and talking from my perspective not a Pole's.

I am a forum member too and I was in Warsaw on June 19th so I too know something about Poland I even traveled to Kazimierz Dolny and a lovely little town on the other side of the Wisla river called Janowiec. We had a bonfire outside the old castle on the hill. A really good trip and a very fine babeque as well. I could well recommend it for a holiday but to live there? Another thing all together. There is an expression, 'no way, Jose'!
