this forum used to not be that way but then you now the biggest tweaker in the world runs this place so this is what you get. :)

i just don't post if i lost it.. partially why i don't post nearly as much as i used to.

osiol:

Why should it be made more difficult or complicated than it needs to be?

aha, because tis the polak forum.. hahahaha
osiol:

You can't repeat post on the same thread until something like an hour has passed.

you sure can as a guest.. you can do it to your heart's content.. pretty whacky if you ask me.
osiol:

hy should it be necessary? It is just more hassle. You seem to be trying to tell me that there is nothing wrong with the current system. What I would like is to find out whether something can be done to make the forum just a little bit more user-friendly.

lol... come on donk. this is polish forums.. do you really expect something to work perfectly? stuff being backwards is definitely the norm for poles.
PolskaDoll:

You don't have to paste it anywhere unless your text didn't go through. As long as you don't copy anything else while you're waiting the few seconds to see if your post posted or not then you won't lose it. I use that method often when writing long posts, long PMs, long emails.

If you are the last poster on a thread and the edit time has ran out, can't you then post even if you are the last poster?

you're making excuses for more work? wtf??? if the forum isn't easy or full of bugs... the posters will dwindle.. i agree with osiol, some of this nutter stuff here is just too much. i don't come here to do work, i am here for fun. if i have to work for my fun, i will go elsewhere.

osiol:

How about this idea: find more ways to make this forum slightly more tricky to use.

that's how polaks operate. it's true man. sorry. :)

PolskaDoll:

The forum is easy to use.

your opinion may not be all that true. actually i find this forum quite conveluted to tell you the truth. there are plenty more user friendly forums out there. unfortunately there aren't many polish forums out there. this is not the only one however.

osiol:

This is a user-unfriendly suggestion.

You are not allowed to perform this action.

It seems while you have posted your data, topic was moved or closed and your data can not be posted. Sorry!

One way to keep typed in text is via the browser. It will disregard whatever the coders decided on the server side. The tip below works only with firefox:

in the address bar type:

about:config

in the Filter line type:

browser.cache.check_doc_frequency

and hit ENTER

Change value to 2.

The above remedies text lost after Back button is clicked in the browser, subsequent to clicking other links.

Meanings of values:

0 - check for a new version of a page once per session (a session starts when the first browseer window opens and ends when the last browser window closes).
1 - check for a new version every time a page is loaded.
2 - always load the page from cache.
3 - check for a new version when the page is out of date. (Default)

osiol:

Let's say you type something to post on Random Chat.
As you type, one of your previous posts is moved to Random Chat, where is becomes the last post on the thread.
You can't repeat post on the same thread until something like an hour has passed.
You don't yet know that your post is the last one on the thread.
You click "Post Message"

An error page appears, giving you the option of editing your last post or returning to the thread.
Anything you had typed has gone.

Yes, that's possible to happen. But it's a very rare case. Avoiding posting off-topic messages may help. It's not a fun activity to move off-topic posts to random chat and do it dozens of times a day..

It takes 30 minutes (not an hour) to repeat post in the same thread IF you are the last poster in this thread.

But even if you are the last poster and post a message within 30 minutes and use Firefox, Opera, Chrome, or Safari browsers, you can click on the "Return" link and the text won't be lost. IE8 should fix this bug too.

Even though I've just changed something and it should work correctly on IE too (you may test it now).

osiol:

in a thread or PM

Not sure how it's related to PM. If the recipient is over-quota, you will not be able to even start writing a message to him/her because you won't even see a post form then.

tornado2007:

Your so right, if you type a bible on a subject and accidently hit backspace or something you lose the whole text when you click back.

Eureka! :) That's how all web browsers work and it has nothing to do with the PF forum.

tornado2007:

if you click 'Post' and it does not post and takes you to another page telling you it cannot be posted

What exactly does it tell you (error message)?

osiol:

Maybe Admin could have fun installing some new feature that solves all these problems. He might not want to, but a bet he'd enjoy a bit of tinkering!

IF you talk about inability to post a follow-up post within 30 minutes if you are the last poster, that's actually a feature in itself. :) And it's a good one - who needs "bump" and meaningless posts anyway..

Wroclaw:

Always happens with a time consuming long text. It's like the post function gets fed up with waiting.

It depends on your Internet connection. I've just posted a test text containing 25,000 characters (5000+ words) and it posted it (doing text filtering in the meantime) within 3 seconds without any problem.

osiol:

Some people are using their clipboards for other things at the same time. It is not practical. Posting should be simple. Why should it be made more difficult or complicated than it needs to be?

It's simple - if you happen to forget you are the last poster, just click on the "Return" link or back in your web browser to have the text ready to copy or save for the next time if you need it.

osiol:

With PMs it is particularly annoying. I once wrote someone a huge long message, all of which I lost due to her inbox being full. Since then, I have always remembered to copy long PMs, but I don't always remember. I think copying every post and every messge is just a little too much to demand.

You've probably confused forums. On PF you won't even see the post form if the recipient's Inbox is full - you will only receive a warning message, but won't be able to even start writing.

osiol:

What I would like is to find out whether something can be done to make the forum just a little bit more user-friendly.

Do a real test and post results here as I described above.

SeanBM:

When your mail box is full (30) it could tell you in red, just to stand out?

It now tells you in red + blinking graphic. It appears on top of the page of every page so it's hard to miss it.

osiol:

So I keep reading. How about this idea: find more ways to make this forum slightly more tricky to use.
Then think about this idea: find a few ways to make it a little bit easier to use.

I guess some users got actually spoiled on how easy and logical this forum is to use. Try other forums and let me know how easier they are to use :.

osiol:

So you know that I know how to get around this problem. Getting around the problem is not the issue. Solving it is the issue.

Do you have auto or home insurance? If you happen to post a message, there may be a few situations you cannot control: the power in your house goes off, you spill coffee on your keyboard, database is being restarted, you accidentally close the window, etc. Same with auto or home insurance - why do you still buy it? Because you cannot control everything - unless you solved the problem of drunk drivers and arsonists in your area.

plk123:
if the forum isn't easy or full of bugs... the posters will dwindle..

You're right -- and in this case your "if" is only a theoretical assumption because in spite of your bitterness it doesn't want to apply to PF.

plk123:

there are plenty more user friendly forums out there.

Please show us examples, not theory.

plk123:

holy crap he fixed it:

... so after several hours someone actually tested it? It's been working like that for a year now.

z_darius:

The above remedies text lost after Back button is clicked in the browser

No text is lost after back button without any special settings..

Potting some big heavy plants today at work. I suggested to Zbyszek that if he put the pot on the ground, it would be easier to lift the plant up and drop it into the pot. Oh no! He wanted to put it up on a workbench about a metre up from ground level. Why? Because he's Polish and will do it his way even if it's more difficult! I'm sure it's not only Poles.

Admin:

Avoiding posting off-topic messages may help.

Other parts of the forum are just as busy, if not just as busy. This can (could) happen anywhere.

Admin:

Not sure how it's related to PM. If the recipient is over-quota, you will not be able to even start writing a message to him/her because you won't even see a post form then.

It has always let me type messages to people whether their inbox is full or not.

Admin:

Firefox

I use Firefox these days.

Admin:

No text is lost after back button without any special settings..

My text never comes back after clicking back to the previously viewed page.

Admin:

Even though I've just changed something and it should work correctly on IE too (you may test it now).

I'm going to test it now, even though I don't use Microsoft IE.

If I don't say thankyou straight away, either I still have the same problem and I don't have any reason to say thankyou, or it had worked and I won't be able to say anything for a little while.

If you have some custom browser settings how it could relate to the general issue. Next time you change a screen saver and will claim PF is the culprit:? Anyone else can write a private message to this user? - for example: http://www.polishforums.com/index.php?action=userinfo&user=985

osiol:

My text never comes back after clicking back to the previously viewed page.

So there's probably something wrong with your computer system or web browser.

Umm... I don't understand.

I did have problems. That's why I started the thread. Others had had the same problem.

I have since tried sending PMs and following up posts too soon, and it all seems to be fine now.

Then I said thankyou. What more do you want?

It just seems you tried to pass on the problem on someone else : Regarding PM nothing has changed, regarding back button - only one change for IE was done. But if you're using Firefox no change applied to you. So yesterday there were 2 problems, today there are no problems - even though nothing was changed.

Anyway, now I know it works for you too (otherwise I'd be still trying to figure it out) so thanks for your support.

Can I say "thanks for nothing" but still sound grateful?

Only the day before yesterday, I tried to PM someone, rather than presenting me with what I shall from now on call "The Zgubiony message", it let me type and type and type, click on send, and only then tell me that it couldn't be sent. Today, I am being presented with "The Zgubiony message" the moment I click on the little envelope symbol.

Likewise, clicking on the return button seems to be different now.

I used to use a web browser provided by my service provider that wasn't any of programs usually listed (like Opera, Firefox, IE, etc.) so I don't know what that one was really.

Admin:

thanks for your support.

Um... It was nothing!

There could be some unrelated reasons. With a script when something works and is not changed, it will always work the same. Maybe you installed some software, your windows/mac/linux system file/s were updated, etc. It happens to all computer users from time to time it's normal in most cases.

Really, the only thing that changed recently was that I started using Firefox. I had the problem with this new software and the old software. I had always had that problem with the old software, but it took until yesterday for me to think about saying something about it.

No new software has been installed on this computer for a couple of months and the only change was when my old browser program went wrong and started closing itself down each time I opened it. This happened recently, but doesn's seem to be connected with all this.

It's strange that I'm not the only one to have noticed the problem.

I'm not a particularly computer literate person, so I don't understand much of this stuff, but my lack of computer knowledge stops me from adjusting settings (playing wirth fire) and messing about with software.

The strangest thing is that those who have "also noticed the problem" have never actually tested if it was really a problem. They just smelled an opportunity to throw their stones, but unfortunately for them it was no smoking gun. I'm still hoping to hear from them to answer my questions..

multiple posts over a number of years = no more long posts from me unless they are copy/pasted. I'm not going to waste my time writing a long post, just to prove anyone right or wrong.

If you check my posts for the past month or so you will notice that I have already made comments about blocked posts. I just didn't inform mods or yourself by PM or by starting a new thread.

And the point that I was making was that, if you spend a long time writing a post then sometimes you encounter problems.

But it's no big deal because as has been mentioned there are other ways to save and post.

That back button thing has just saved me a lot of effort.

I'm sure that it worked when the site was set up (maybe it's just my imagination), but then it didn't. Now it works fine.
If we didn't have this thread I'd never have known about it.

So thanx for that one, Admin.
