I know that it may sound ignorant, but I just wonder why in French history books it is said that Poland regained independence thanks to Napoleon and it is one of the reasons why we have his name in our national anathem.? Do they mean Warsaw Principality? Radiculous...

So the US was 'discovered' by a Polish explorer. fascinating. I hear Capernicus was from Bhutan. I read it in the Daily Mail.

It's the first time I've heard that the French think they gave Poland independence. Is it widely claimed or just in a few old school books? Old history books are great though. I seem to recall being taught that we lost to the Americans once. Raddishulous.

Are you sure it's not a case of the Polish thinking the French think they gave the Polish independence?

I'm not sure of anything today. You could be right though. It could be a double bluff.

- unfortuately this is what I heard from a French person being surprised that I am so poor at History and do not carry flowers under Napoleons statue as he is the one, who we should be grateful to for being on the map of Europe (as in France every child knows that ???). That is why I ask.. Whose books tell the truth? Or I skipped a chapter? (history lessons were boring, anyway)

Funny bunch the French. Rather stingy on the food portions. Best ignored. But if you want the truth there is probably a Hollywood film that will set things straight

Among many claims for giving us independence the French one is a least part true.
Starting his East-expansion Napoleon needed independent Poland as a bridge head for the campaign so it was a perfect win-win situation.
About 10% of the Great Army were Poles familiar with conditions on the Russians war theatre, keen on revenge and truly motivated.

If you ask me ... yes .. Napoleon has done quite a lot for us.

That's some hardcore stuff but there was so called Jan z Kolna, who led some Danish or Norwegian expedition, which according to some sources reached Boston area some 20 or 30 years befor Columbus made It through the ocean. Chris didn't really "discover" America (even for Europeans) there definately were many before, dude becam famous because he "popularized" the whole thing.
