In my opinion we have very interesting history, maybe it isnt well known in some countries, but in my opinion it is rich.

We have some nice achievements:

Germans (Prussia) were paying us tribes and called us their lords.

We have taken Moscov in XVII century, converted their Tshar into Catholic :P , and Russians till today celebrate the end of this war as it was yesterday (one of the most important days in their country)

We beaten Soviet Union in 1920

We had first modern constitution in Europe (second in world after USA)

We smashed (King Sobieski) Turks and saved Europe form musilms (even muslim Tatars were on our side)

We were one of main reasons Soviet Union collapsed, our Pope JPII, Brzezinski creating Al-Qaeda (he is rather American with Polish origin and Afghanistan was on our side in 80's), Solidarity.

In XIX century we believed that we are nation chosen by god :) Poland Christ of Nations :)

And there were less spectacular events but nice as well.

Like battle of Kircholm when 3000 Poles beaten 11 000 Swedes (casultes 300 Poles 8500 Swedes LOL ;) )

Or that when Napoleon (F*** him) send our troops to smash revolt on Haiti and our soldiers realized that they have to fight against nation who want to be independent, they changed side and started new life there, and that is why so many of black people from Haiti have Polish names.

Nice topic! I'd submit the biggest historic achievement was the constitutional shift away from absolutism and toward democracy in the mid to late 15C.

What about the battle of Kluszyn? I think this was in early 1600's when a smaller force beat a larger combined Scots/Swedish? force.

What about Samosierra? Stupendous! In fact, the whole Napoleaonic War was a magnificaent feat for the Poles.

What about Koscziusko's contributions to the AWoI?

I look forward to reading some more obscure contribuionts too. Cheers Dan

What about the Polish contribution to overall military strategy? Ie, cavalry tactics, uniforms, armor, unit size and functionality. I have heard that the Polish use of battle formations is a direct descendant of modern military unit sizes.

I thought Napoleon gave the command when he realised no one else could do it. When **** hit the fan he knew who could sort it out!

The Spanish were the good guys in this battle, so nothing to be proud imo.

This was great. The Austrians at that time were in their world organizing excursions outside Vienna to admire the ottoman camp! They behaved like the Turks were sort of touristic attraction.

Um - I dont think I ascribe to this type of rationale. Seeing God as overseer of and beneficiary of Poland's victories is certainly a historic consideration. I recall that Poland saw itself as the "bulwark" of christendom, and Sobieski himself, after Vienna, said "I came, I saw, God conquered".

I'm not religious though (non practicing Catholic).

In military history magazines. The austrians had made an agreement with Poles,in case Turks attacked Krakow,Austrians would help Poles and if Turks attacked Vienna,Poles would help Austrians.Poles kept their part of agreement and they crashed the ottoman army when Vienna was about to fall.
Poles could have heavily benefited by this battle as Austria lacked any military after turkish attack and they could conquer Vienna and many parts of the Austrian Empire.
Instead of that the noble Poles prefered to withdraw and the Austrians rewarded them 80 years later.

There was also large number of German forces in this battle if I recall correctly. They would also have something to say.

Basically it was the attack of the Poles. The Poles were very fanatic in these wars against ottoman Empire. They dissolved the turkish army which had never sustained such a defeat. After that the Ottoman Empire never managed to raise up or threaten Europe again.

Yes, that too.

And, Slovenian public feel great Yugo-nostalgia, since euro comes in use and since Croatia increasing pressure. Well, they can`t say that we didn`t told them.

From the Ottomans they copied the moustache. The turkish angry moustache had created quite an impression in Europe. If you see all the kings in 17th century in Europe try to compete for the most impressive moustache.
