I don't care but if you want to discuss it feel free - just get the hell out of ruining other people's threads with jingoistic sabre rattling

And whilst we're at it, can we decide once and for all who has the biggest dad.

Cant see as they are. What wars have the actual American military won? Vietnam, nope. Korea, nope. Even funding rebels they have failed i.e Cuba, Nicuragua (SP).

Isnt the best fighting force commonly agreed to be the French Foreign Legion?

Don't we need to quantify the question a little before we can hope to answer it?

France and Italy are the only two nations to have reverse lights on their tanks.

It's a great security measure. It helps minimize casualties in their own populations when they need to go full speed in the reverse gear ;)

They don't spare Canadian soldiers either. And the military even have the audacity to call it "friendly fire".

More UK soldiers were killed by so called friendly fire in the first Gulf conflict than by so called enemy combatants

True. Welcome Hueg. You missed your own 'where's Hueg' thread that was deleted in the great off topic lounge purge a while back. There were many flattering comments, some of which were about you.

The French Foreign Legion is not made up of Frenchman but is a unit comprised of foreigners. The extremely tough, physical and pscyhological training are world renowned. Recruits have been known to die and suffer serious injury just in training.

Really no nation has the greatest fighting force. Each has its own specialist sections that are designed to do a certain job i.e. SAS, SBS, Navy Seals etc. Out of their specialist zone they all would be in trouble.

You forgot to mention the Somali rag-tag army that brought them crushing down from their state of the art blackhawk choppers.

Today I met my former student. He joined the army 5 years ago, is an NCO. He spent 8 months in Afghanistan, earlier he had served in Iraq.

We talked about various things, about Americans too. So, let me quote what he said, these are more or less his own words:

The American army is full of criminals and uneducated simpletons. Bush government is running out of soldiers to cover up all messy spots in the world, that is why they are taking convicts out of prisons, as well as dumb farm boys from armpit villages in Montana or Wyoming or any place wild enough (Wild Wild West :):) ). Those guys are very unruly and disrespectful, they wear rings/jewellery all over their faces, officers feel a bit intimidated etc.
The biggest problem was communication - he said his English was good enough to communicate with American officers and soldiers from other contingents, like Czechs, Canadians etc. However, talking to American rural boys or ex-convicts was futile - because nobody could understand them, including other Americans. :):)

Generally, he remembers Afghanistan and Iraq as hell on earth and doesn`t wish to go back there.

since we are on that subject. Canadian army reqruits Native Indians to fight for Canada in Afganistan, so as a result, they are fighting somebody else's war, therefore taking part in genocide their ancestors have experianced. It is really sick.

well maybe. I just looked it up and it appears that it Natives were used to fight along with the Americans in the Civil War.

There is a movie "Buffalo Soldiers" and it appears to the th epolitically correct version of the events. Oh, well.

Such is the way of the world. A few years after the Jacobite rebellion some Highland regiments were raised by the British to fight in Canada and were involved in similar acts they themselves suffered from.

General James Wolfe, in the Battle of Quebec was quoted as saying that Scottish soldiers should be sent into battle because
"they are hardy, intrepid, accustomed to a rough country, and no great mischief if they fall."

Some things never change :-)

You are right. But my understanding is that the term also includes native Americans. I stand to be corrected

For other uses, see Buffalo Soldier (disambiguation).

Saddle and accessories of the Buffalo Soldier.Buffalo Soldiers is a nickname originally applied to the members of the U.S. 10th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army by the Native American tribes they fought. It was formed on September 21, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The term eventually encompassed these units:

U.S. 9th Cavalry Regiment
U.S. 10th Cavalry Regiment
24th Infantry Regiment
25th Infantry Regiment
27th Cavalry Regiment[1]
28th Cavalry Regiment[2][1][3]
Although several African-American regiments were raised during the Civil War to fight alongside the Union Army (including the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and the many United States Colored Troops Regiments), the "Buffalo Soldiers" were established by Congress as the first peacetime all-black regiments in the regular U.S. Army.

On September 6, 2005, Mark Matthews, who was the oldest living Buffalo Soldier, died at the age of 111. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.[
