Is this day anything like the 4th of July celebrations with fireworks and cookouts?

November 11th is like a wet Sunday. The only difference being that even more of the shops are closed.

Most people are probably sat at home watching a DVD or such like.

Each city has different ways of celebrating the day. During the day there are masses in church, next parades by reconstruction groups in military uniforms of the epoch, and flowers are put at the graves of the unknown soldier. In the evenings there are patriotic performances and firework displays.

There is no tradition fro outdoors picnics and barbecues in Poland because November is usually cold and windy.

But today is a perfect day for a patriotic tour around the city. We went to the Cathedral at the Wawel Castle, saw Polish ulans parading in streets, later we visited the Church on the Rock to see the crypt with tombs of famous Poles, and finally went to Kosciuszko Mound.

The Poles seem to have a holiday every other week. More than once I have wandered into a closed door not knowing everything was closed. "Oh sorry today is All Pierogi Day" or something. Hmmmm. It's funny that even now my expat friends all remind each other..."Hey get to the market as it is closed for the next 34 days" or something like that.

That being said...I know today is a very important one.

LOL, that was hilarious. We should play guess the holiday.

Could tomorrow be 'Breathe Deeply Day'? Or 'Seek the Go³±bki Jars Day'? Or even 'Smile Day?'. Nah, couldn't be that one

Not to belittle today...as it is a very important and worthy holiday...

But yeah I would not be surprised if "Doda Electroda's Breasts Day" and "Little rectangular glasses and gelled hair Day" were on the calendar somewhere. Oh and don't forget "Girl's getting spiked heels caught up in the tram tracks and cobblestones Day"...that one is just before "Do you have a cigarette? Day"

In fact it would probably be easier for them to put the normal days on the calender as special ones to show which days things are NOT closed. There would be less to sort through.

Hehehe

How about the 'Adjusting the Floorboards Day?'. Or 'Indigestion Day?' Everyone must eat indigestion inducing food.

Seriously tho, it's important as a foreigner to respect and honour the traditions of their host country. It's a way to learn and should be interpreted as such.

Józef Pi³sudski, can you explain why this is such an important day in Poland. Why they celebrate it?

Poland lost her independence on 24. oct. 1795. They ceased to exist 'till the 20th century. They gained their independence back on 11. nov. 1918. I think this is a "good reason" to celebrate their own Independence Day.
