Our season begins with the U.S. premiere of Przemyslaw Wojcieszek's debut play, Made in Poland, directed by Jackson Gay at the 59E59 Theaters. Our show is part of a festival of new Polish work, presented by the Polish Cultural Institute. Made in Poland is an exhuberant, funny, and fierce play about a rebellious young man furiously searching for how to live in post-communist Poland.
Mr. Wojcieszek is currently adapting his play for the screen. We are thrilled to offer Play Company Friends an exclusive preview screening of excerpts from this new film followed by a discussion with Mr. Wojcieszek about his film and theatre work. Sheila Skaff, a leading scholar on Polish cinema will moderate. And join us afterward for a toast and refreshments to celebrate the start of our 2008-09 season!
Przemysław Wojcieszek debuted as a film director with Kill Them All in 1999 and quickly became a leading representative of Polish independent cinema. He was named Best Director in 2004 at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia for Down The Colorful Hill, and won a 2005 Polityka Passport in film. In 2004 he began working in theatre, exploring themes of tolerance, personal identity, and what it means to be Polish. Made in Poland marked Wojcieszek's debut, both as playwright and as theatrical director. The play was named the best play in Poland in 2004. Wojcieszek has subsequently directed four highly acclaimed plays: Whatever Happens, I Love You, Darkroom, Dorota Masłowska's Two Poor Romanians Speaking Polish, and Personal Jesus."
