No idea where in the world you're based, but I'd have thought that the embassy would be your first port of call.

Take the legal route.
If your profession is needed in the USA you may be sponsored.

I don't really believe the saying "grass is greener on the other side" but this economy has me worried. Lay offs left and right, gas sky high, even the price of Happy Meals is going up LOL

Hay, as long as you can get a gallon of gas (about 4 litters) for the price of 16oz Java at Starbucks, you're OK. You can't walk 20/25 miles on 16oz of java. Can you? :) Some places in the world may have to work 2 or 3 hour to get a happy meal. I hope you can get 2, 3 or 4 of them for an hour of work...Ok, I'm speaking in commodities terms here. Hehehe.

LOL I know that I've become a lazy american. I've been told that many times. And no I wouldn't leave the states :P But we've had it so much easier in the 90s and early 00s than we do now. I can't even qualify for a home loan making less than 60k. :(

Give it time. The lending institutions are a little gun shy right now because of their past sins. The pendulum will swing back to a reasonable point, and you will qualify.

Hmmm I don't know about the US but certainly here in the UK you will struggle greatly now, to get a mortgage without a hefty deposit. Things are pretty grim and it's expected to get much worse over the next few years. Not sure the 'pendulum is going to swing back to a reasonable point' in the near future! That's in the UK at least. It must be pretty grim in the US right now I expect in terms of home loans ?

There are lots of places across the ocean. In some, people would not even consider moving to the US. For them it's good to fly to NYC for a weekend shopping trip (you can get decent jeans for just $50), but that's about it.

Also, no need to go across the ocean for quality living. I had some contracts in the US. Work and money was great but I never felt at home as much as I did in Canada. It was a great feeling to be greeted with "welcome home" at the Canadian border, as opposed to "how much cash are you carrying" at the US one.

The US wasn't it for me, and it isn't it for many. After all life's not just about gas cheaper than a cup of Starbuck's coffee. (btw. wasn't it a Starbucks joint where they charged rescuers on 9/11 for a few pints of hot water?)

I can't comment on that, I'm in Canada. We haven't been hit so hard here compared to the US in terms of foreclosures. Our lending standards appear to be a little tighter compared to the US, and I think there are a few more safeguards in place against failed mortgages (mortgage insurance). I also believe we don't try to "mine the capital" out of our homes as much (Home Equity Line Of Credit). Borrowing against the "value" of the house to go out and "consume" really hit the Americans hard when the value of their homes started to fall, but the value of the loans didn't. It is easier to walk away from a loan that is larger than the value of your home.

It's about time the banks or other landing institutions screen potential buyers better. It was insane to promote and give huge loans with zero down payment. It just had to comeback and bite hard on the a** - both, the lander and the borrower. I hope the the crisis will eventually be resolved and most people can keep their homes. Personally, I don't know anybody affected by this, yet.
