You will never make peace in this country with insulting behavior like this.

An American sniper was removed from Iraq after he used a copy of the Quran for target practice, the military said Sunday, a day after a U.S. commander held a formal ceremony apologizing to Sunni tribal leaders.

Mate, peace was never the aim…it was, it is, and it will be all about $$$. So shooting the Qur'an is not gonna make headlines in the US – sadly.

You know that, I know that, but there are plenty Americans on this forum who claim it's some sort of moral crusade!

Well, considering the history of the discussion, you might’ve well been referring to me, rather than the US soldier. I’m sure he never read it. I can also, probably pretty safely, guess that the poor guy didn’t even know what he was shooting at…

Have you read the Qur'an? How many people do you know that have read it? How many Poles do you think have read it? How many Europeans? How many non-Muslims? My uneducated guess is very few. I know many Christians that never read the Bible, but all Muslims that I know (and I know quite a few of them because I’ve been working and living in Muslim countries) have read and know parts of the Qur'an by heart! Many of them have also read the Bible and can very well analyze and compare the two religions. Can any non-Muslum that you and I know do that?!

My bad man, I thought I was a bit ambiguous when I wrote that comment.

Who knows the mitigating circumstances, maybe he was frustrated and needed to lash out at sth.

I’m glad to hear that.

I was talking about the local news in the US, watched by the majority of Americans, where this type of news hardly makes it on TV. Of course, CNN and co will mention it.

But just to spice things up a little, take a look at NYT front page today…I don’t see any mentioning about this accident there. You see plenty of pro-Israel propaganda, more (again, and again) bulls**t about Obama/Clinton, etc…

Now, your argument to this can be: “well, of course it won’t make it on NYT…it’s one of US’s biggest dailies – there are more important things to write about” True. But I can guarantee you that this accident is on every national and local newspaper’s first page and any national and local TV news in Iraq and most of the ME countries.

It’s quite hard to “win” a “war” when you have no idea what the “enemy” thinks/believes and what they think of you.

It's still a top story on BBC News in the (UK edition).

I looked at the New York Times online and it's front page there.

I was referring to the print edition…but it’s good that's on the online one. As to BBC…they are one of the best, of course they will cover it :)

This is another Iraq related story that was in the news today.
URL
Its about a RAF Hercules which was hit by two bombs and had to be destroyed back in Feb 2007, thankfully nobody was hurt.

At the time the MoD said there was no enemy involvement in its destruction.
Makes you wonder what else is being covered up.

Take it easy dtaylor, we don’t want any blood and body parts on the floor here:) If you think about it, they are quite good at covering what’s going on around compared to some other US news

I don't think that it matters who has/hasn't read the Qur'an, but I think it's safe to say that all soldiers who are serving in Iraq are well aware of the importance of this book to the Muslum people.

Perhaps before but the war is terribly unpopular here.

I'm Catholic but I've read the Qur'an. Comparative Religions is a good thing to study because it removes the barriors that society puts up between people. The more you know the more you understand.

Ok ok, we need to get this into perspective.
A guy shot a book.
There was a case recently of a muslim member of staff refusing to sell a childrens book about the bible to a customer in Marks n Spencer, I think it was..
Hello, if she refused to sell what I was there to buy, I would be insisting she was sacked on the spot. It's not for anyone to say, how to feel about a book. The soldier shot it.
Rather he shot it than a whole street full of innocent civilians.

I think they need to gorw up, ok the qu'ran means a lot to them, but to the soldier it meant nothing.
When are some of these muslim countries going to start allowing the western christian religion the opton to build churches for there own nationals that are not muslim. No time soon, I would imagine. Tollerance isn't a 1 way street.

That could well be true. Probably not one in 10,000 GIs would be able to read the title of a Koran in Arabic.

Pretty soon it will be illegal for anyone to shoot anyone during a war, shame no one told the islamic fundamentalists that.

They don't shot anybody. They just blow themselves up and kill as many innocents such as children and women as possible.

As I said , tollerance isn't a 1 way street.

Wheres their tollerance and exceptance of other faiths? Where are these churches in an islamic country?
They show no tollerance whatsoever, and I am amazed at all the fuss this story has caused. A fully trained professional soldier has lost his vocation because he shot a book.
Well how many idiots did it take to blow up the twin towers? Did we say it was wong, yes we did. Did they appologise, hell no.
More than a bloomin book got shot on that day, thats for sure.
