From today's International Herald Tribune:

http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/04/07/business/polecon.php

"Szczecin is our trump card," said Lothar Meistring, the mayor of Löcknitz (GERMANY), where real estate agents say property prices are as much as 20 percent lower than in the Polish city.

But unlike many bleak towns in the former communist East Germany, where birth rates have slumped and apartments stand empty because jobless workers have moved to wealthier western states, brightly painted family homes have mushroomed in Löcknitz, and the town now needs a bigger kindergarten.

Who woulda thunk?

interesting

"I would be very happy to work for a Pole. Unemployment is a huge problem here."

Meistring, the mayor, says a handful of "problem citizens" was damaging the reputation of the majority in Löcknitz who welcomed their Polish neighbors.

Polish investors received the same help or subsidies as did German businesses, he said, adding even the most critical far-right supporters were benefiting from the Polish newcomers.

"One of the leading NPD officials, a tiler, is renovating a house owned by a Pole at the moment. How ironic is that?"

He just wanted to be polite! We Germans are VERY polite you must know! :)

PS: I doubt he said Sczezczin...no German can spell that. He surely said Stettin how it's used to be...*nods*

And another article with the same theme:

"For us it's cheap here." - Polish assessment of Germany

"The price of real estate in Loeckwitz, 25 kilometers away, is also creating a lot of interest on the other side of the border. Some 200 of the town's 3,000 inhabitants are Polish citizens.

Project manager Jan Rybski moved here a year ago from Szczecin. He is currently overseeing the development of a "German-Polish settlement" targeted at middle-class Poles from nearby metropolitan areas as well as German retirees looking for the quiet life."

While many German firms may have chosen to relocate abroad to save labor costs, wages in western Poland are only marginally lower than in the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which borders Poland. Wieczorek's firm, Romag Nord, has already taken on 18 German workers. And he has plans to more than double the size of his workforce.

Drang nach west. Boom is over but it is good step.

It was to this propaganda spreaded by some people on this forum.

"Stronger values" because some estate in East Germany was bought by Poles???

What about the centuries of german "Drang nach Osten", polish partitition etc...stronger "german values" then too???

Funny guy! :)

PS:
"The properties on offer are nothing less than giveaways, even if they need a little investment," said Magdalena Pysz, a Polish estate agent.

"Poles love the Prussian order, the cleanliness, the lack of corruption and the neat, cobbled streets."

Eastern Germany was doomed the moment Helmut Kohl decided the east and west marks should be on par. That was reckless, incompetent and economically suicidal for the east.

Legislating that the two marks must be on par, de facto rendered the east German industrial base obsolete and overvalued, and simply wiped out any economical comparative advantage that eastern Germany could have had.

20 years on, the results are there for everyone to see.

While the poles were busy working their asses off and benefiting from all the business they managed to get due to they being a cheaper option, eastern Germans were sitting on their asses doing sod all and living off the state hand outs.

Basically the poles have been steadily building up their capital base (and hence their wealth) whereas the Eastern German capital was wiped out and the bit that still stands is slowly decaying away.

I predict that things will get worse for eastern Germany.

You seem to know things we don't. Which info would that be then?

They do move a bit but only to the western and southern states. Pretty much every German girl serving in a bakery or a supermarket in Munich is eastern German.

Der Osten holt auf
(The East catches up)

As I said...you need to update your info!
