The Rose is English.

So what flower would Poles think of when they think about Poland.

But would all Poles think of Poland when they see a Sunflower:

Like Scotland - I think of a Thistle or Wales I think of the Daffodill

CZERWONE MAKI RED POPPIES

During WW2, in Italy there was a Monastery called Monte Cassino. After numerous attempts with a enormous cost of life, The Allies failed to take that position.. In the end, it was the Poles under General Anders that finally succeded in taking that position at the cost of over 1000 Polish troops..
The mountain was covered with red poppies. They said that is was Polish blood. General Anders survived the war and asked to be intwerned wirthg his troops.

It's not just that, the rose is also associated with wars in the UK "War of the Roses" Lancashire & Yorkshire - and still today we have the red rose of Lancashire and the white rose of Yorkshire.

I was just curious regarding Poland and if they had a flower that most people would instantly think of.

I just have an interest in flowers and their meanings too :0)

Personaly I can not think of any single flower that would be connected to Poland.
Of course many flowers and plants have in Polish culture their meanings but there is no that would represent Poland...
For example flowers of horse-chestnut are connected to school ending exams that are held in may, mistletoe with Christmas (it was the symbol beafore the christmas tree came into Polish culture in XIX century), willows for Easter etc.

There is no recognised national flower of Poland as such, but after the battle at Monte Cassino in World War II where the Polish troops took Monte Cassino after heavy losses. The only flower that was standing was the Cornflower or the Corn poppy, which in Latin is called - Papaver rhoeas (in Polish - mak), and the flower has become a symbol of that war, but not as a national flower.

I think ill take that as a complement...And as I found out about it, it was a flower to represent the "Alpine Valley", which Poland has alittle part of....Just a thought

But it only grows up high in the Alps, right? In rocky, dry soil.
That's why it is so furry and leathery.....its trying to stay warm! :)

Thanks W8 :)

Here is an interesting bit of info....

Corn Poppy (Papaver Rhoeas) or Red Poppy, a flower with vivid red four petals, most commonly with a black spot at their base. is the national flower of Poland. It is a variable annual plant in the northern hemisphere and generally flowers in late spring. During and after World War I, fields that had been disturbed by battle bloomed with Corn Poppies, and the flower has become a symbol of that war.

So it's the poppy then...I've never seen the light coloured ones before, they're quite beautiful :)

I would say the red poppy is more associated with war the one above is quite different.

papaver somniferum is what is (used to be) abundant in PL. that's the one i have always associated with polska. the difference are the big seed pods (heads). none of the other poppies have them.

maybe things have changed though as the one you mention has no medical value thus is legal.
