How come it feels like I am in an arm wrestling match whenever I shake A Polishmen's hand?

I understand a firm handshake unconsciously gives a good impression on someone, but I now always gear myself up for when i'm meeting a Polish man. You know, like tensing my arms in order to give as bad as i get.

that is how they shake people's hands. it is impolite to give so called "fish handshake" in Poland. Also, you can tell a lot about the person by the way they shake hands.

Yes. For instance whether to accept an offer of Peanuts or not. :)

well, maybe if you stop shaking hands with people like a sissy, you may start liking a firm hand shake...

Because most men like a firm handshake and not a limp wrist.

Look people, I am not talking a 'firm' handshake. I'm talking about a handshake that attempts to test your might.

You know what, you people are just in a 'get mad' mood today. So you can't even get my handshake. Have a middle finger.

Well, I wouldn't go this far...little men have little hands to match. I'm not the tallest, but fear my kung-fu grip :)

no we just telling you that you are being silly with posting such questions. You have no idea about Polish culture and you are NOT interested, but very keen on assuming things.

Well to me the whole handshaking, everytime one of my polish staff comes into work is just something we english are not accustomed to, I understand totally that its a polite jesture, but to us its only something very formal, for job interviews etc not an everyday thing.

polish men tend to give firm handshakes and look you in the eye when doing so

as a man should

and when they raise their glass to you they look you in the eye

I was in Croatia few days ago and noticed that they also quite often shake hands.
Maybe it is more eastern -south European custom.

Some people develop a wet fish handshake for professional purposes - to tell the person they are dealing with that they are somehow open, listening, even pliant, malleable, ductile and so on. This can be merely to lull their contacts into a false sense of security. I don't like it, but I also don't like having my fingers broken.

and if you don't have a glass, get one. I've just been handed a bottle. This means I now have to give up my computer for a little while. Fair payment? That depends on what's in the bottle.
