Euro 2012 hosts get Uefa warning

Platini announced the hosts of Euro 2012 last April
Poland and Ukraine have been warned by governing body Uefa to speed up their preparations for Euro 2012.
There have been concerns that political change in both countries has affected projects such as stadiums and roads.

"The next four to six months will be crucial to avoid any critical slippage in infrastructure projects," said Uefa president Michel Platini.

it would cause tremendous embarrassment if UEFA took the games to another country. They are in their rights to do so if they believe that the stadia will not be ready on time. I have heard that the government has considered bringing in workers from India and China to work construction in Poland. I read an article where they were considering ordering convict labour to build roads and stadia

Yes the stadium building is a mess. Typical really. Would be a shame if they take the matches from here. However if the governments can't get their acts together there isn't much they can do. Krakow's stadium is halfway finished. However Wisla Krakow plays there. The one in Warsaw is causing the biggest issues. They are still fighting over where to build the damn thing. Personally I think the highway expansion is fantasy, there is no way they will finish that. The rails have been undergoing a constant upgrade prior to them announcing this event. Personally they need some outside help to manage this, the government is not capable of doing it themselves.

I sincerely hope I do not upset anyone with the following statement, as I would be delighted if EURO 2012 was hosted in Poland. However if UEFA are going to host the games elsewhere I hope they do it sooner than later. what would really hurt would be to have a football stadium 80% completed and then to have the games taken to another country. If UEFA did it tomorrow, there would be a huge scandal. Tusk would blame Kaczynski. Kaczynski would blame Tusk but it would only cause embarrassment. However what would really hurt is for Poland to be left with partly constructed stadia that they could not finish in time for the football cup. The expense of having to pay out for the stadium construction but without any revenue from European football fans coming into the country would be very painful indeed.

it's not looking good for Poland, can't see any of the infrastructure improvements happening at all and when you look at the debacle of the new airport terminal for Warsaw it's difficult to imagine how they will manage to build a new stadium. Would love it to happen though, come on Poland - get your finger out and do something about it !

The Ukraine values football more. They also have private business owners who want to build these stadiums not just for the Euro Cup but for their club teams as well. I don't see the same kind of urgency in Poland. There is a lack of coordination with the clubs, governments and businesses. It's probably the biggest difference. From what I've read is as far as stadiums are concerned the Ukraine is much better off, however in the Ukraine they have more transportation issues than in Poland. 4 years isn't really a lot of time for these two countries to completely rebuild a lot of the infrastructure that is needed. It's not China and certainly not Germany. Both of those countries have the resources to build things quickly. It would be a shame for this to happen, but I wouldn't really call it a surprise at this point.

No danger! Too many poles scrounging a living abroad to pull it off. I have noticed that the first influx of polskis that arrived in the uk were good workers, but lately, I noticed that polish 'aquaintices' are 'qualified' joiner, painter, plumber, brickie, candlestick maker, recommened by their fellow comrads here in the uk. Did these retrobates get these qualifations from a cereal packet? With all of supposed 'skilled' tradesmen over here, how is a joiner who only has experience with matchsticks, ment to build of stadium? Holistically, I think that is is an unrealistic and unachievable goal, they are going to be left with egg on their face!

when does your holiday-contract in the uk run out? Is going back home really a holiday?why not go somewhere exciting like Russia or Germany, maybe somwher out with the old iron curtain. I dare say you would feel rpound, being able to go the the motherland and actually contribute something to the economy. Is poland still under communist rule?

Each Nation past and present building towards a major competition has had to deal with setbacks and hysteria on both the media and populace level, unfortunately, Polish hysteria knows no adversary, it’s a group living on apocalyptic dread under some dark clouds continuously pouring down pessimistic liquid shreds into the minds and souls of its citizens. There is a long way to go, a massive undertaking of industrialist proportions, that I concur with, but the paranoia has got to cease, in the end we will be triumphant in hosting this tournament and all will be well. Looking for a ray of sunshine in this storm is sometimes an exercise in futility.

A lot of things are slow to work here due to the fact pay is non existent. This is probably a large reason why foreign companies aren't knocking at the door to build some of the upgrades. They know they won't make a profit. Since many of the skilled workers have left and the remaining don't want to work on something the government was thinking about allowing convicts to do, your left with a huge gap in the potential workforce.
