I'm making a v. short trip to Poland later this week (2 nights away to be exact) and when I booked my flight, I thought that I'd save a few quid by not taking any checked luggage.

Hmmm... starting to regret this, as I've got to pack a couple of changes of clothes plus take lots of make-up and other assorted lotions and potions.

I'm sure there are plenty of PFers who've travelled to Poland without hand-luggage, so let's have your tips!!

I expect you know this already, but...

Don't put any liquids in your hand luggage...or they will be confiscated :)

liquids in your hand luggage

This is due to some muppet discovering you can make a bomb with just liquids...so the airlines not suprisingly don,t like you to have them....

Cheers guys - yup got my zip-lock bag and am decanting everything into smaller bottles as per the regulations.

Does lip gloss still count as a liquid?

Here's a quote from the DoT website:

The following is a guide to the security requirements for all passengers departing from UK airports and also provides some advice that will help passengers pass through the security search point as quickly as possible.

Key points to remember:

With effect from 7 January 2008, the one item restriction will no longer apply at certain airports. Click here for more details. The maximum size for items of hand luggage is 56cm x 45cm x 25cm per bag. However, airlines apply their own operational policies governing the number of items of hand baggage which may be taken in to the aircraft cabin.
Before departing we strongly suggest you check with your airline on the cabin baggage arrangements for your particular journey.
Where possible, put all liquid items in your hold baggage. This includes water and other drinks, creams, sprays, pastes and gels.
Liquids, gels and aerosols are only allowed in individual containers of 100ml. All containers must fit comfortably in one, transparent, re-sealable bag no larger than 20cm x 20cm (eg a freezer bag).
We strongly recommend that you take time to read the guidance below before setting off for the airport.

I was wondering whether any other PFers had any "Take a Break" style tips for sticking to these rules.

Lip gloss definitely counts as a liquid; last time I flew I even put my lipstick in the ziplock bag.

Unless it's a business trip where you need formal wear, just your carry-on should be more than enough for just 2 nights. I fact, in the summer when all your clothes will be lightweight, you should be able to pack one bag for a 4 to 5 days' trip.

If you need tips on what (and how) to pack, www onebag dot com is THE website for you :)

My personal tip: wear as much big/heavy items - jacket, sweater, heaviest shoes) - when you go though security (alternatively, carry them with you as if you've just taken them off).

Also, check the regulations at the particular airports you'll be at. Some airports allow you to carry a handbag/manbag/camerabag/umbrella as a separate item, some don't. You can allot some luggage weight to those, but do check beforehand (I learned this the hard way at the Bournemouth airport where I had to put my handbag inside my carryon and barely escaped checking in my bag - it was 1.5kg too heavy)

Cheers, Clouddancer.

Unfortunately it's a business trip (so I guess I'll need something smartish to wear to a meeting), plus I've got to pack some formal eveningwear. I was also hoping to pack my running gear too.

Waaaah!! Back to the drawing board :)

And after all that, I decided to spend the extra £16 and pay for checked luggage :)
