Hello everyone,

Just wandering if anyone knows how to find a half decent job in Poland?

My girlfriend recently moved back to Poland, so the best way for me to keep things going with her, is to move out there.

I have looked on jobpilot.pl and some other webpages, but have only seen a few english positions, and these seem to be in and around the vicinity of Warsaw, with international companies. I would of course consider working for a Polish company, my Polish is not brilliant, but in a Polish environment, would soon pick more up.

I am an office manager with all the relevent IT skills etc. before that i was a mechanical engineer.

If anyone knows, of any companies, links etc, I would be extremely grateful.

Cheers

It also depends on what you mean by "half-decend" (by what standards - American/Western European or Polish ones).

Well I'd advise starting the teaching route, dull as it may sound.
Firstly if you find a decent school, this will help process you into the system for ZUS (N.I) and also other clerical obligations. You will be able to mix with an ex-pat community who will be more aware of the various oppurtunities around you. The chance to spend time studying Polish which is a must will be available especially if you yourself are teaching. The wages tend not to be too bad relative to the median Polish pay and it will allow you to work on a contractual basis which has obvious benefits for you if you are seeking a permanent contract elsewhere. With you IT skill and the mechanical engineer buisness you have an added string to your bow which would be the adavntage of teaching technical English, which is no doubt paid even better.

The downside to all this teaching malarky is you need the a TEFL or to be more precise a CELTA. This takes about 4 weeks of intensive study, but once you have this certificate the world of work in Poland will become alot more accessible.

Poland is very much a place where who you know is a lot more important than what you know.

Doesn't that describe pretty much any kid 10 years of age or older?

I worked in Poland for a while and can tell you a few things.

The Polish students are incredibly educated, generally know multiple languages and have a decent amount working experience by the time they graduate. So this means you basically have two options (neither of which are easy) - Either work manual labor or if you have an MBA or management/specialist experience then apply for some of those which you are most qualified.

Entry level positions are pretty much impossible - a company has no reason to deal with the paperwork and documentation of hiring a foreigner (especially nonEU) if a more qualified Polish individual is available.

Yes, many are incredibly educated but one can also take a critical look at the statement. I say this because I have met students from different areas of study and they (this is not a scientific statement but rather a personal opinion) have really good theoretical knowledge and ability to memorize. Still, they seem to have issues about using the skills they have learned.

I once had a roommate and one day I asked 'How are you doing?' and her reply was 'Sorry, what?'. She had a near 100% exam result on English grammar but still...

Another example of this was with a Polish business student who is really good at exams, but still had hard time recognizing issues in real business situation.

The September issue (2008) of Poland Monthly mentions the lack of innovation in Poland. Results can be achieved 'just' by investing in more modern technology rather than coming up with some truly novel way of doing things. I think this also applies to the work market in Poland: it is mostly technical processing requiring technical skills that require little innovation.

This I have also found out when looking for a job in Poland, it is mostly 'technical' kinda work what is needed in the market right now.
