Salary Expectations for Language Schools in Krakow

I am a native English speaker applying for teaching positions at various language schools in Kraków - what is the going 'hourly' (i.e. 45 minute) rate here for native speakers? Also, what hourly rate should a cat like me request if asked in an interview?

Here are my qualifications: CELTA certificate MA degree one year of TEFL experience (outside Kraków) 15 years of teaching experience in the states (another subject). I am also a ZUS-paying resident of Poland and have established my own business here. Thanks for any and all constructive input! (Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere on this forum - I searched several combinations of seemingly-appropriate words and couldn't come up with an answer...)

I'm working in Warsaw (have post-grad Higher Dip. in Education, TEFL cert, 5 years experience teaching EFL) and in my 3rd year working with a school I was offered 50 zł. brutto per 45 mins or 3,500zł for 28 hr wk with private med insurance and of course ZUS. The latter worked out at 31 zł. netto per hr. but is better for me in terms of financial security; regular hrs (usually I'd only work 25 hrs max.); access to great, free resources in a very professionally run school with very nice staff and management; the holidays are plentiful and all paid. Anyhow, I bargained higher and got 4,000 zł. netto per month for a max. 28 hr. week. I'm expecting I could have bargained up to max. 60 zł. brutto if I was to go the way you want. For individual lessons (1 hr) I have charged 70zł sometimes 80 zł per hour, depending on the student's financial status, etc. Hope that helps. Maybe you want a certain financial trail for financial reasons, but with your qualifications and experience you will make a lot more money through private lessons. Word of mouth, advertise around your area, free newspapers/portals or do in-company stuff. Best of luck:-))

Does not sound bad at all given the cost of living in Poland . ( especially if you compare teachers 's hourly rate in England ,Ireland, France and the cost of living over there)

It depends, but the best piece of advice is to look at the amount of work needed to work one 'clock' hour - if they expect constant lesson plans handed in and expects you to attend constant professional development courses, then ask for considerably more than you would from a school that's happy for you to turn up and do what you want. Also, tailor it according to what they want - if they want you to work awkward split shifts, then of course, raise the amount requested. What money you get - well, it's up to you to negotiate this. Many people will share stories of how they get 60-70zl net an hour from schools, but I don't believe the vast majority of stories. Realistically, you should aim for 35zl net minimum from a 'method' school and at least 45zl net from a 'traditional' school - to reflect the workload. Don't be so quick to discount such 'method' schools though - financially, it may work out much better to work 25 hours in a 'method' school with no preparation versus 25 hours in a 'traditional' school that requires oodles of preparation and leaves you no time for the private lessons.

Alternatively you can teach five groups at each of three levels and so only have to prepare three times for 15 lessons. That's how you teach 30 lessons a week and spend only two hours a week plannng.
