Why do a lot of Polish people stare and why is good personal hygeine shunned?

No, this thread is very offensive though.

Anybody else noticed how likely Poles are to get personally offended if you say even a word of criticism about any Poles?

I'd say so. I think it's got something to do with the society here being so homogeneous.

I don't agree with the smell being worse in Poland at all. I come accross more smelly, unwashed people in UK! As for 'manly odour' it is disgusting and i can't imagine a woman being attracted to that. Normal body smell is fine if not disguised by aftershave or perfume (although i do have a soft spot for nice afterhsave ;), but sweat is awful. Hair gel is fine if not used in excess. Shower 2ce a day, as someone mentioned before, is a bit much unless you work physically or simply sweat a lot...

As for boy racers, you get idiots like that everywhere. It is a fact though that Polish drivers on average are more aggressive and jealous of drivers with nicer cars ;).

I agree and you have probably summed it up perfectly, I was only curious...

wow, such a battle over the smell of some individual people, and those patriotic vibes here and there... you guys seriously don't know what to do with your free time, both sides are exaggerating and generalizing. I'm actually quite happy because nobody critisized my opinion hence I don't have to become a furious personally offended Pole.. or maybe should I.. not to break the good wide-spread standpoint..

You are bit on the "other" side ????

Anyway for me the different approach to hygiene is a cultural thing, of course not in the played up manner you are introducing.

So, what percentage of population in your opinion have problems with personal hygiene?

They did actually! well my mum did as my dad is deceased but I also worked whilst being a student, Something which students here can't comprehend.

Mind you, Polish universities seem to like giving students absolutely mental timetables, even for degrees that really don't demand it. It seems to be normal for people to land up with 7am classes one day and 7pm classes the next, which is just nonsense.

I wash my hair twice to 3 times a day and it is lovely and soft and my scalp is not dry.

you spend more time in the bathroom then most women.. do u have a life outside
of washing your hair? LOL

I'm actually quite happy because nobody critisized my opinion

my question to you is, why use public transport and put up with the smell if you
have a fancy car?? why would you even attempt to get on a bus with such a cool
ride? or are you just pumping us folks for good material?? lol

I was the biggest defender of this subject not to long ago. I thought it was more
of people making fun, but I went to a wedding in january, the guy wasnt polish
he was ( who knows).. anywho he didnt use deoderant <~my god I thought I was
going to puke. but I kept my cool, didnt say anything. went I left the church, I was
glad to breathe fresh air.

I asked my daughter about it, she was part of the wedding party . she said oh yeah
thats one of grooms friends who doesnt believe in wearing chemicals.

so I said well he should, or at least he shouldnt have let him stand up in this wedding
because the whole room we sat in reeked of one mans B omg O <~and I usually
dont run across this.

( the funny part was , I was checking my pits.. lol smelling them saying, god I know
Im clean, I showered today.. and I was right.. I smelled good.. lol.

don't you just find it hillarious how people use this arguement to try justify the fact that really, they're just lazy mingers who hate to wash? i understand children might protest at the prospect of being bathed, but grown up people? there is no excuse for being a mess like that, especially if you discomfort other people with your smell. in my workplace we had 2 cases of people who had to be taken to the side and asked to shower reguarly and use deodorant because working with them due to their 'natural BO' was unbearable. funnily enough, they were both British guys, one in his early 20s, the other one in his 30s, so not exactly that young to run from their mother at bathtime or too old to not be able to take care of themselves. just lazy and ignorant of people surrounding them, with the 'i don't smell anything so it's ok' attitude. and both single all their lives so far to top that off ha ha hmm wonder why?! i understand there are genuine cases where people are homeless, old and frail or poorly and they just can't wash themselves everyday, but for someone to go to work, to a party, get on a bus and stink like hell just cos they can't be bothered to wash i seriously have no sympathy.

If I drive through poznan people always pull up along side and stare at me
People also stare in suprermarkets,

It is normal. If you are black, you are a rarity in POland. I also stare when I see a black person, and I tell my kids to stare too.

dnz:
One of my friends here laughs at me and tells me that he only showers every 3 days

3 days? It is very often. I take a shower every 2 weeks because I am green and save the planet`s water. Do you know that Poland will have a serious problem with water soon?

At the moment there are no general water scarcity problems in Poland. Irrigation practices are not wide-spread. However, in some areas during low flow periods subsurface irrigation causes water shortage problems. The intensification of irrigated agriculture linked to the EU Common Agricultural Policy instruments may cause water quantity problems in the future.

YOU are a ridulous thing. It's a known fact that you can easily dry out your hair and scalp by washing it too often. Ever heard about psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis? No? You're no better than the working class, are you? Must be your great English education system that makes me deal with complete retards such as yourself. Using the shampoo more than once a day DOES cause bad skin and hair condition. I never said being too clean or washing hair once a day does. I always smell nice, my hair is soft and clean, my teeth crystal white. Of course, you dare to deny it because I am Polish and you dare to say complete bollocks about my nation to make it look any worse than yours. Guess what it is not. I swear to God, my dog has higher IQ level than you.

With all due respect , your over reaction is frightening & you come across as very insecure.
I suggest that you go in search of some anger management courses before it all boils over for you .

Showering twice a day is not good for your skin. You don't have to study dermatology in med. school to understand that.

Washing you skin too often damages its protective features. And even after washing you skin carefully there are 7-8 million bacterias per square cm of human skin. Because they can also live inside the epidermis, and even if it's extremely superficial it gives the bacteria protection. And when the skin is damaged it is, of course, easier for these smalls bugs to cause infections.

Saying it's good to shower several times a day is just b*llshit from a medical point of view. And how does someones hair (esp. long hair) look if the person washes it twice a day... I think we all know that.

What if someone sweats like a horse? They need to shower twice daily to remove the odor. :):):):)

Then you should shower 2 times a day. But not be surprised if you get bad skin.

No, it means sweating profusely with a stinking odor of a horse during everyday activities.

I'm wondering whether these people who say you shouldn't shower more than once a day wash their hands after going to the toilet. If they do, do they only go to the toilet once a day?

Of course not. You're just being a tiny bit silly now, you know it, I know it, and you know I know it ;-P
In other words - showering more than once a day would not be enough. You would need to shower every single time you went to the toilet. A bit extreme, huh? Do you practice that? If yes - respect to you!

You somewhat miss my point. I was commenting on the fact that some people here think that it is bad for skin to be washed more than once a day even though doctors tell us that we should wash our hands after going to the toilet. Either: they only use the toilet once per day; or they don't wash their hands after using the toilet (in which case I refuse to listen to anything they say about what is and is not healthy); or they do wash certain parts of their body more than once a day (and as they are typing here, it's a fairly safe bet that their hands haven't fallen off from the ill effects of being washed more than once a day).

As a side note, yesterday I wanted to watch the cricket but missed half the first match because I had to go to another bar to watch it: the bar I usually prefer had an English customer in it who stank so badly that I couldn't bear to sit in the same room as him!

then there is the case of learning that you have to wash as well for the deodorant to actually make a difference to the way you smell. covering up sweaty smells with more and more deodorant creates this disgusting, sweet stench. i reckon that every workplace should have showers so the really sweaty people can sort themselves out at lunchtime ha ha.

i reckon showering just to freshen up during a hot day is not bad at all, as long as you dont scrub yourself with a thick brush or them shower scrubs. make sure to moisturise and you'll be fine. same with hair, although every hair dresser i've seen told me that if it's possible you should let your hair get naturally greasy as often as you can. i got to the point where i don't have to wash my hair for 3 days and it still looks fine. doesn't feel great but it's good for it.

Dear Seanus,

1. There is nothing in the forum rules that state that ones username should reflect one's gender.

2. Now that we're jumping to conclusions ...Seanus .. sounds like anus ...therefore you must be an arse.

3. Your comment is a bit rich coming from someone with the picture of a sheep on his profile .. but then I guess it can get a bit lonely in Gliwice...

4. I recommend you brush up on your Johnny Cash...( this may be a bit too cryptic for you ..maybe ask somebody to help you with it ..)
