Can I apply for unemployment benefits in European Union if i havent work

I have a dual nationality - that is i am both Australian and Polish citizen. I was born in and have lived and worked all my life here in Australia. I would like to go live in Europe early next year. I have thought about either Poland , Portugal or Norway.If i cant find a job, then am i able to get unemployment benefits if i have not contributed to any insurance in Europe. If anyone can help me out or give me some advice - that would be much appreciated!

I'm pretty sure the answer is no - at least in Poland, the law is that you have to have paid 12 months of contributions before being entitled to claim any. There's also a question of residence - although they can't discriminate against EU citizens, they may very well apply a test of residency within the EU before allowing you to claim any.

For the UK, again, you'd have to be working there for 12 months before you could get the EEA residence permit which entitles you to benefits.

The law may be different elsewhere - but it would seem very unlikely that anywhere would give you unemployment benefits without any history in the country in question.

Be warned that with a Polish passport, you still need a work permit for certain countries/activities.

I agree, Poland has a stricter position on this than the UK. 12 months is the norm before a claim can be entertained.

You could turn to prostitution.

Some Scottish women turn to prostitution when they are in dire straits. My dad once had a function in a social club near the harbour area. He was flashed by a girl of, he said, around 15. Desperate for money!

Still, this thread is about unemployment benefits, noimmi. I actually collected JSA, my 36 pounds a month, when I couldn't get into work after returning from Asia. LOL, it happens. They subsidised a train trip down to London for me and contributed towards the hotel cost. They paid 30 pounds, and I covered the remaining 18 pounds, to stay in a lower-end hotel.

Noimmi, you are a law student and currently reside in Scotland. Has the position changed? I was treated quite well in the offices on Dee Street, Aberdeen. They seemed to look at me like I was out of place tho, but I took that in a good way.

BTW, does EU Law form part of the curriculum of your law course? I had many EU modules on the syllabus of my Hons year. It was thanks to the quality teaching that I received there that I decided to do further study. So, benefits?

Yes EU law forms a significant part of my syllabus. I find it very complex; how did you cope with EU during your studies.

I can remember doing the seminal cases. Van Binsbergen, Dassonville, Costa Vs ENEL etc. It was hard going actually, going through the obiter of the presiding judges and A-G's. Understanding the ratio decidendi of the likes of the Italian Trabbuchi took a bit of doing.

Principle-wise, I guess I was sound enough to have an argument with one of Europe's leading Professors. The depth of his research was amazing and I learned a lot from him. He has written one of the core textbooks, together with Stephen Weatherill, aptly titled EU Law. Paul Beaumont, have you heard of him?

I think he even touched on benefits :)

Folks! I am in the process of verifying some information and hope to get some genuine info... on this subject .
What is the official Unemployment dole in Poland , for how long is it payed out and how are they elligible for it.
What are the child support benefits for unemployed mothers with children
(I was told there is only a one time handout of a 1000 Zl for every newborn.)
Is there a system to verify if a person is on the dole in this country or receiving child support (if it exists ) and how can it be verified.
