Poland and Germany are two EU countries with the smallest growth of unemployment rate among young people.
According to a report by Eurostat, in the first quarter of 2009 five million young people in the European Union, between 15 and 24, were unemployed.
The largest rise in the youth unemployment rate were registered in Latvia (from 11 to 28.2 percent), Estonia (from 7.6 to 24.1 percent) and Lithuania (from 9.5 to 23.6 percent), and the smallest rises were found in Germany (from 10.2 percent to 10.5 percent) and Poland (from 17.8 percent to 18.2 percent).
All member states, except Bulgaria, recorded a higher youth unemployment rate. It ranged from 6 percent in the Netherlands to 33.6 percent in Spain.
In Poland, the growth of unemployment rate among young people was relatively small but the total unemployment rate is still quite high (18 percent). In 2009 approximately every fifth young person in Poland did not have a job. (mg)
