I'm an American who lived in Poland for 6 years. I'm not welcome anymore.

And I am an American. I never had perm. residency. I lived entirely illegally and never earned a legal zloty. Now with Poland as an EU member, those days are gone. Americans are not welcome in Poland. Only EU citizens can work there and travel freely. Americans are the new Ukrainains for Poland. As far as working in Poland, forget it. If you are an EU citizen are are sent by a bank or a major company, you, of course have it all laid out before you. But as a non-EU citizen or an an EU citizen just going there to find a job, forget it. Won't happen, Poland has never been career friendly toward Americans or any foreigner. Polska dla Polakow. That is the way it is in Poland.

Didn't you just say that you're illegal? WTF do you expect? Why should you expect to be venerated over others just because you're American?

Well, it is a 'Union'...

On the contrary, I seemed to be treated really well even being an American.I don't seem to have many issues with even speaking English to many Polish. However they would rather I speak Polish, which is always a humorous event.

Well has America welcomed Poles with open arms, don't think so.

Americans have a mentality that here s*** doesn't stink, Americans need to understand that when they enter another country like Poand they are just another number or being rude just another scumbag.
Americans look after there own, like the Chinese etc. why cannot the Poles think the same way.

I know you are just making a statement, but the whole idea of that in general is very interesting to me. I usually hear of the opposite. Extremist Americans roaring about Mexicans, extremists from the UK...etc. (not sure on the etc. part to be honest)

Can you or any other Americans tell us about you life in Poland illegally? How did you blend in and how did you make ends meet?

I wish I could find an honest website or blog (new to that word, still seems strange) on this topic!

Are you surprised? Poles come to the US and overstay their visas, don't want to go home and stay here illegally.

I came to the US legally and stayed here legally, studied, worked, did everything legally for 10 years, and just recently I was able to get my permanent residency. America is no different.

I think icypole's point is that when Poles came here, they were allowed in openly (as were all Europeans) but the often they were treated poorly by the populace, being called "dumb Polaks" and so forth. This happened to the Irish and Italians as well.

Don't be so rude, he has a head but there is nothing between the ears.lol

I am talking about Poles going to the US of recent time (just look what has occurred in the US) leave the Poles who came to the US after the war alone.
I would not be surprised if sledz is in the US illegally. cheating the system and not paying taxes..

Listen the reason is because they all overstay their visa, stay here illegally and that's why the US doesn't want them to come here. They are a bunch of cheaters

Honestly I think michaelmansun is troll ;) I don't think Americans are second clas citizens in Poland. second Ukrianinans or what ever, maybe they have problems with bureaucracy, but I doubt that they are treaten bad. I think some americans who live in Poland can say something about that. heheh I have heard about some Poles who come back but Illegal Americans living in Poland heheh and who work lets say on construction ;-) I don't think so.

Actually I think Michael makes a whole lot of true points. I know exactly what he is talking about as I have been in the same position. The mistake he makes is that he thinks it's an anti-American thing, in fact. Anyone who comes here to try to find work is pretty much f@#$%d from the start. Michael knows that only those who are set up with a job before they come fair well. 98% of those jobs are with non-Polish companies anyway. Please, no comments about "I've got a CELTA, TEFLA, BBC, IBS or whatever and found a job straight away and was welcomed as a King etc". One cannot base a whole system of coming to a new country to try and find a job on the fact that the ONLY opportunity you have is to teach English because you did a rather expensive little course or you humiliate yourself by jumping around like a clown teaching the Callan method. A little diversty in opportunities would be nice.

OK OK

I see Polish forum will be more and more about imigrants who live here than about Polsh emigrants.

Firstly we are at the end of transformation and we started to realize that something has changed.

Don't look for job in eastern Poland it is still poor part of Poland. Bialystok, Lublin are poor towns there is a lot of Ukrainians, Bielrussians who looks for job ...

Most of men form there are in UK now ;), so if you are looking for woman it is good place (joke), it is not the best place to find job.

Go to Poznan, Wroclaw, Warszawa, Kraków eventualy Gdańsk ... (there is a lot of jobs and honestly you shouldn't have problem)

If you are form old EU or USA always say on interview that you want to earn the same money as Poles and you are able to work as good as Poles (just say it I am sure it will help) some people who come here have enormous exceptations ... so just say it

We just realized that Poland changes rapidly there is a lot of opportunities, wht is important the best jobs you will get by private contacts. Tallk to your Polish friends or more likely Polish life partners ...

In my opinion teaching English is the best idea, market needs you and you will earn much more than average Pole.

I have never heard statements about foreigners taking our jobs ...

It should seem pretty obvious that until fairly recently there were really very few jobs for foreigners other than teaching English, unless you were fluent in Polish, so why would an American in this case even try?
It would be idiotic to come to Poland without any contacts or knowledge of the job market. But it seems Mr. Mansun managed to survive for six years so it must not have been that bad. It isn't what nationality you are but what are you qualified to do.
Even though Americans poo-poo doesn't stink, if you cant "mowi" you really can't expect a good job. Lastly if you asked any American (geographically challenged nation that we are) where in Europe are their many jobs no one would say Poland. if the average idiot American knows anything about Poland they know it is struggling with high unemployment. Everyone I knew thought I was an idiot for working there for so little.

You guys need some reality check.
One can communicate in English when IN Poland but job market is 99% for those who SPEAK polish. Notice that those immigrants who do well in US made an effort to learn local language. If you speak polish you have no problems finding job in Poland and be here.
Yes, illegal immigrants without local language have it even tougher.
