Im planning to move back to Poland soon after over 20 unhappy years in Canada and US. Would love to hear from people that already made that decision and moved back. Do you feel you made the right choice. Were you able to find a job and settle down?

Hello marysia,
And welcome to the Polish Forum.
Did you move to Canada and the U.S or did your parents take you?
Have you been back here often?

Most of the people I know that have left the US to go back to PL forever, have left to treat Poland as the "retirement land", not necessarily to go work there.

After 20 years in Canada & the US, you should be "set" financial, do you HAVE to work, or want to?

Also, those who have returned have complained terribly about the healthcare in Poland. The waiting, the care, the attitudes.

I never regretted the move after 12 years in US. From day one I felt in Poland like being back home. First two years were just hilarious! Everything made me very happy ..from traveling by PKP to mashroom picking and watching polish tv for hours...
Unemployment is now about !! 6%. With gained experience -if you have some entrepreneur wibe in you - you should be able to set your own way making an income with no problem. Poland is not saturated in so many business fields and competition is easy to overcome.

Thank you for the feedback I really appreciate it. After 20 years in US and Kanada Im not financialy set and have to work. As far as health care it can not be worse than in US. Here it is only for rich if you don't have money you don't have any health care

I'm not in your shoes but I would not worry too much and not even think too much about your future life in Poland. You are very likely to find something to suit you well when back. You will just see what is available and act when already in Poland.
Wories about unknown future was something that only was preventing me from going back earlier. I wasted at least several years in USA, had simply stayed for some years too long. Before going back, Poland was - in my mind - a big unknown. It turned out that Poland was both: the same and ..new.

If you need work then you should think about the bigger cities and how they are developing.

With a fresh start you will be able to pick and choose.

Lodz seems to be developing quickly, but I don't know the facts.

Wroclaw is for banking, computer specialists, retail and education.

Im from Gdansk so that's where I m moving back to. Again, Im like you Kowalski, I know I should've done it long time ago but the fear of change was keeping me here and if I don't do it now I know that in a year or so I will be looking back with more regrets.

More likely she will be caught up in seeing a place new to her and the "honeymoon" phase will last a year or so then she will realize it isn't 'better' in Poland...just different.

This is not a utopia any more than any place is.

If she has been unhappy in North America for 20 years there is something else wrong that Poland is not going to fix.

I second that. Marysia, first examine what went wrong that you had such unhappy time in Canada. Changing location may not fix anything.

Poles? Most likely not those returning from the US. Those in the US, and after a 20 tenure are rather racist, and are happy to be home among their white friends.

Unless you have plenty of money, please think twice about returning. It pays to check it out first ie return for one year and leave you options open.

Things have changed in Poland when you last lived there, it is a different country, increased crime, more black people and poor heath systems. Good Luck anyway.

More black people, that was a ridiculous comment from Bollocks. Many black people are here to study Medicine and other subjects. Funny, when I think hooligan here, I'm not thinking about black people.

I am glad my mother migrated here in the early 1900's. I listened to many stories of trials and tribulations during the Russian invasion. She visited once and said she was glad she left. I have had relatives visit and then later migrate here and are not sorry.Of course many things have changed since freedom from communism.

Very very sorry didn't mean to be racist or anti black, the point being made that things have changed in Poland (IE 20years ago there were very few foreigners living permanently in Poland) every one felt at home, the situation is different today, black people, irish people or people from the GB its all the same, the Irish are probably the worst

lol, it doesn't mean less people! some forum members have a funny way of thinking, whereas it is ok to sink the boots into pakistanis, russians etc, dare mention anything bad about black americans or jews and wow your the worst people in the world. Get over it and get a life.

A family I know lived in the US for about 9 years and recently moved back to Poland. The father stayed behind but the wife and two children (18 and 8 - one was born here) are soooo happy to be back. The oldest boy never could "fit in". Once he got back to Poland he is happier than ever. His mother always felt like a stranger. She has never learned English, didn't live in Chicago, where you don't have to know English, so she always didn't feel like she belonged. Now after going back, she is so happy she did.
