Just interested to know as I am moving to Krakow in 2 weeks, tried to research into it but didn't find much. I'm living on a budget and hoping I can get away with spending 400z a month by buying fairly cheap but decent food

You should be fine. Just don't eat out too much ;)

Plenty bread rolls with cheese to go around.

Alas, I've completely lost my appetite and seem to be existing on nothing but pate sandwiches and soup. Dreadful :(

Pate is not bad, just full of fat which is the problem.

It is bad when you've eaten nothing but that in 5 days :(

This is absolutely fine provided you have a kitchen?.
Do you shopping in the farmers markets and you both can eat very well on this money.
And don't buy meat, it is the most expensive.

Dreadful indeed, try to remember your body is a kind of machine and needs good fuel.
I know it can be depressing when you are undernourished
but try to get down to the farmers market with 40PLN and you should be able to make a stew that'll last the both of you for 3 days.

Worse, I've got the flu and have absolutely no will to eat anything but soup and pate :(

I opened the fridge earlier and it's full of nice meats/etc. Apparently it all smells really nice, there's even a nice huge bit of bacon sitting in there. But of course, the smell of meat is making me want to throw up :(

How much does it cost (chicken, pork)? What about fish (makarel, salmon)?

Real steak, or the kind that turns grey when cooked?

If you get the frying pan hot enough it'll turn black. Like all things in Poland its trial and error. Like the wood scenario i'd like to say to the butcher oih mush, let me just fry some of that there steak on my portible frying pan to check the quality.

Ive had some of the best and worst steak in Poland.

Meats in Poland are fantastic, Turkey, Pork etc. beef is a tad tuff, but hey if you boil it long enough no probs. I just got back from france and i was missing huge chunks of meats with my chow.

See its not all doom and gloom.

On my first trip to PL in 2001, we took a trip to Bialowieza park, and had dinner in a small restaurant that had "steak" on the menu. I think it came off the hoof of one of the Zubr that died a few years ago. The beer was good though. Later in the trip, a friend was giving me a guided trip through Warsaw (Lazieki, Wilanow etc) and we stopped by a downtown restaurant (can't remember the name though) that specializes in steak / seafood etc. Absolutely wonderful piece of meat. And the waitstaff was excellent as well.
