Petrol theft in Poland common?

Just wondered if its common for scallys to steal petrol in Poland as i've had a fair bit siphoned out of my car recently about 80 litres in the past 2 weeks, They seem to be getting it out of the fuel venting system under the car probably by use of a mechanical pump,

I live in a good area too this is why i found it suprising, At first i suspected one of the godawful roads here had caused a fuel leak but i had it on the four poster and everythings in order so its obviously being stolen.

Is there a method to prevent this?

there is but they seem to be pumping it out through the vent pipe or the overflow tube.

sounds like a plan :), thought about packing the pipe theyre using to get it through with rat poison so if they suck it through then they swallow it then i realised that it could be classed as murder :(

I don't see a problem there.
Years ago, from a few storeys in a Manhattan building I saw 3 guys remove a complete engine in 20 minutes from a BMW parked in the street down below. A repair garage will charge you 3 to 5 hours labor for that.

Thievery in Poland? I don't believe it! You must be making it up to make Poles look bad...it's things like this that keep Poles from getting visas to the US. LIES LIES LIES.

Its just a fairly large saloon car, Theres no evidence it was lifted but if you lie on your back under the rear end you can see a pipe which is around 10 mm diameter coming from the side of the tank, I assume that they must have pumped it out through there....

I always thought that stealing fuel from cars had kinda died out with almost every one having a locking fuel cap , and various blocks in the fuel pipe to stop people putting a siphon tube in there....

I suppose anyone with mechanical knowledge could figure out a way to get into the fuel system from below , but not without jacking the car up i would think , especially on a low slung model like a Bmw....

Does your car not have an alarm that would go off if the car were moved or tilted....? If it hasn,t , then its a case of waiting up all night to catch em , could be dodgy if there is a gang of em , or finding another parking place....

Personally i always liked the idea of rigging the car so when anybody touches it they get a shock.

I suppose they'll just short it though, resourcefull bunch the Poles, you gotta hand it to them.

Hehehe, that'd be worthwhile just to see it. We have screwed up laws in Scotland. For example, you can't put down glass on your walls, or barbed wire. If sb wants to trespass, it's their own damn fault but the law doesn't see it that way.

To hell with it, a car with a shockwave buzz sounds cool.

This thread is a load of bullocks. the OP didn't even say where/if he lives in PL. What does Pl or Polish ppl have to do with this thread?

as for prevention, how about just sleep in your car 1 day, and put some black blankets over you when in the back seat. Or set up a video camera recording to a VCR/comp overnight.

i doubt that. i watched last weeks Top Gear, and it took about 4 hours to get a Ford Focus motor out.

Yeah we all know theft is not common at all in Poland..especially concerning automobiles..it couldn't have possibly happened like the OP said...clearly just another attempt to slur the great Polish race like every other negative thing said about them. Lies lies lies :\

Err... well wherever he lives in Poland its quite possible that the petrol was stolen by Polish people...and even if it wasn,t Polish people , it happened in Poland , so i suppose it does have some relavence to a forum about Poland....

it's more common to have car stolen than petrol :-) You should consider yourself as lucky.

Yeah....for all the trouble it takes to get petrol out of a car , and the risk of being caught....you would think it easier to steal the whole car....At one time people used to steal nice wheels from a car , but soon changed to stealing the whole car , removing the wheels , and other bits they wanted , and dumping the rest.....

Has it occured to you Dnz that there might be a reason why petrol was removed without any sign of the petrol cap being tampered with....i mean , you would think a theif would just rip the petrol cap open with a crow bar , but these people were carefull not to damage the car... could it be that somebody you know in the area is doing this , somebody who hopes you will not notice the huge fuel loss , and will continue to supply them with free fuel....?

I have never seen it this bad anywhere else so yeah it is typical to Poland...goes along with a lot of the inefficient behaviors here.

It's not that I am absent-minded, heaven forbid, but in recent years I have left keys in the ignition and possessions in the back seat with the roof down on numerous occasions in Poland and never had any problems.

So you mean that you do not have any sources which show that Poland has more of a problem with theft than your beloved USA, where everything and everyone is perfect. OK, that's fine.

I don't know about sources but I have what my own eyeballs see here and on the news. What we have in the US are people who go to the gas pumps, fill up and drive away without paying. That doesn't happen as much these days because of "pay before you pump" and security cameras. The cashier will not activate the pump until the gas is paid for by cash or credit card. That's the popular form of gasoline theft around here and it's nearly impossible.

I've never seen that in Europe (apart from at some 24-hour petrol stations in Switzerland which don't have any staff, there's just a machine which you feed your card/cash into and then you can pump as much as you paid for).
