As my two europe wide simm cards have just closed down - 09 & awayphone I am now looking to purchase another card. I only really need it to phone home to the UK from Poland and maybe Germany. I have my Orange Uk card as a back up but on one trip to Poland a while back my contract orange bill came to more than the cost of the trip.
Can I just go into a mobile phone shop and buy a prepaid simm card that will work in Poland & Germany.
Thanks very much

PS If someone has a suggestion for a card in order of preference
most reliable connection
easiest to top up
price

I can tell you what not to buy 'Sim Plus' its probably got one of the best reception rates in Poland but the minute you leave the country you have to do weird things to make international calls. Like activate it and dial some weird code #111#05# (the number) #, so basically you have to write your numbers down on a pice of paper before making a call, and even then more often than not it doesnt work.

What a load of crap. Uneccesary b shit.

You turn roaming on to receieve calls but pay as you go "Sim Plus" does not allow you to make international calls unless you type in a code - activate the phone and then dial the desired number, every single time you make a call. I was like just let me make a fcuking call, direct from the phone book. I would imagiune its a fail safe to stop clients bumping up huge bills whilst overseas but what the hell, whats the point really. Poles love making life difficult dont they?

Just to get this straight I can go into a mobile phone shop and buy a card with reasonable rates to phone the UK and just top up the card at any mobile phone shop!!

i have era TAKTAK buy top up cards everywhere, buy 100zl cards and get free sms etc works in germany as well, some kiosks you hand over money and they give you reciept which you dial into the phone and tops up that way.

I know of a mobile phone shop where I am staying.... So if I purchase 100zl top up, the sim card is thrown in and I need to ask for a era tak tak. I know era is the phone company.
Are the rates reasonable to call the uk from poland and the same card will work in germany so again I can phone the uk. What is a typical amount of top up please.
20zl or 50zl!!
Have I got this all correct because I know already that the phone shop staff do not speak a word of english but luckily I know someone who can translate for me.
Cheers

cant remember how much for the sim card but you buy that seperate, i meant buy higher top ups and get more freebies.

as for cost i am not sure what it is now, at least with polish sim card you dont get charged for incoming calls (whilst in poland). i used to spend 300-400zl a month on calls but that was to various countries.
