Like Tak Tak, Heyah, Era, Orange, etc. Which one is the best/cheapest? Thanks for everyone's recommendations.

Plus are hilarious - they allegedly have an option for 'English' when they send you information/threats/etc, but they seem to send English and Polish texts in equal measures. But they are quite usable if you don't speak Polish :)

I bought a NOKIA at Orange in Paris in 2002 - do you think I could just get a new SIM for it in Poland (I am looking for a pre-paid Orange plan)? Or is the technology too old?

You should be fine with that phone (provided it is unlocked). As far as I know the NMT network in France had already been switched off by 2002, so your phone is going to be GSM. If it isn't unlocked, you can get it unlocked at pretty much any phone shop for about 30zl.

Alternatively you can just buy brand new phone with no SIM for 110zl upwards at Saturn. I'd be buying a new phone myself.

Thanks, Harry.

I Googled Saturn and apparently there is a branch in Gdansk, where I'll be. They do not show any prices, but if a basic phone is around 110zl, I am a happy camper ;-).

Right now (at least in both the Saturns in Warsaw I've been to in the past seven days) they are doing an LG phone for 111zl. I think they've got a Nokia for 129zl or something like that.

Obviously these phones don't do much beyond making calls and sending texts. If you want to be able to take photos or listen to music, you'll need to spend a couple of hundred more.

I've done some research, and it seems that Tak Tak from Era is the best for me. I have a quad-band GSM Motorola RAZR and will get the prepaid SIM.

It's very tough for me to find out the details from any of these sites since I don't speak Polish and you can't translate text from the images on the site.

Can anyone tell me:

- With a prepaid Tak Tak SIM, can you get data service (i.e., e-mail on the phone)
- Is there a way to get the SIM sent to the US in advance? I have a couple of weeks before I move, and it would be nice to have it when I land. If you can't... is there an ERA store at WAW?
- What is the upfront cost of the SIM?

Any warnings before I find myself dependent on using ERA for the next six months? I'll mostly be in Warsaw, but I'll be travelling throughout Europe as well...

Thanks!

yes

i didn't notice an era store (or any stores) upon arrival at waw. the sims are available at some street kiosks, magazine shops, etc. empik has them at the checkout register. you should be able to get to your hotel/apt and walk not far to get one.

i got the 9zl starter pack, and just refilled 150zl at a time as needed. (you might want to buy a refill when you buy a starter pack) refills are available at the magazine shops in the understreet passages at tram stops (at least that's where i've bought mine).

I use heyah, because they have a flatrate option where you cn call within poland AND to any country in europe for a flat rate of 44gr a minute - which i think is pretty good for a mobile rate! I also read a poster today (briefly as we were going past in the car) and i think it said that simplus were offering a similar deal. I'm happy with heyah though because i had an 02 phone in england and the heyah network is compatible with the simlock on that phone, so dodn't need to pay for it to be unlocked!
