Winter in Poland?

Poland also has snowmobiles, they are called "skuter śnieżny" but the trails there are not as well developed as in the US or Canada. They are very expensive and only a few have them. There are not enough open spaces in Poland to ride them but in Zakopane they are used by the ski patrol.

sure snow - there can be plenty of it - sometimes seriously impeding transportation (this year there was almost 40 cm 16 inches of snow at times where I live - there is always lot more snow in the mountains) temperatures down to minus 25 degrees at dawn - many cars won't start in the morning it is all quite fine when there's snow and a couple degrees below zero the worst thing is when recurring conditions of snowmelt and snowfall become longer - then it's cold, wet and unpleasant - water on the streets and on the sidewalks - it's much easier to catch a cold in such conditions than when it's 20 degrees below zero when it is really cold (like these minus 20 degrees) you have to be careful not to get freezing burns cold weather (freezing temperatures or snowfall) can start as early as the begining of November and may last until begining of April (though last couple of years winters ended sooner than this and the winter of 2006 only started on Christmas - first days of freezing conditions - but this situation was quite anomalous)

haaa I passed through in December for the Xmas holiday... was negative -3 c when I left after Christmas from Warsaw.... was lovely.

When you go on kulik (sp?) don't ride in the front. It's cold and smelly.

Białystok's not all bad, surely. I've seen it from a car window and the view from one particular car park. Aaah! Great days! There was snow at the time.

Actually I just arrived from Western Europe to settle down to Krakow. It's freezing now. I temporarily live at a friend's house in the suburb and must sometimes wait for a bus for very long minutes. All this weather condition actually makes me very tired. In the evening, I already feel sleepy at 9 o'clock. The cold and the very fresh air ;-) I'm was not used to such stimulating climate in my country. However it's only -10 C. Another guy from my country who settled near Warsaw told me the temperature now where he lives is between -20 and -15 C.

Cheery: I hear the Winters are brutal down there. Yeah...they are very brutal for a few days.Just like at the moment.It's -12 C in my city and it has been like this for the past four days.But it's getting warmer starting on Tues. It really depends, because sometimes here can be a 0 Degrees temperature almost through whole winter.

O my GOD! I have only been in Poland for two minutes…. I came in the summer for three weeks and fell in love with the place, Gdynia, Sopot, Gdansk… wow… I thought I had found paradise… SO, I moved here to live and start up a business in November, all my Polish friends told me that the winters were very cold, -15 to -20 was normal… I just thought, that’s ok, I’ve lived in Yorkshire, I know what a bleak winter is like….. BUT….. I am now in Kartuzy, and it’s been -17 all week, I promise you, you have no idea what -17 is like day in, day out until you are here living it. And now my friends are telling me just wait till January and February when it gets really cold…. REALLY COLD!!!!!!!!!! -25 can be the average……. OK, OK, I can hear you all laughing, but it’s ok, I will survive. This afternoon I am moving to a fantastic little apartment in the Gdansk, right in the city centre. It’s brand new and it’s going to cost me just 1100 PLZ a month all in, bills included, that is around £250 for city centre living. Not bad at all. I am going to be internet less for a while, while I wait to get connected. So merry lovelyness to everybody. Have a fabulous Christmas and everybody take care.

Yes PL winters are brutal. That is why you ALWAYS have to keep a bottle of vodka in your fridge and when it gets really cold, have a herbata z prądem (tea with vodka, or with Krupnik if you don't like vodka) - that will warm you up! It is -13 in Krakow now and I'm going Christmas shopping. Hopefully, I will not freeze to death by the time I get to Galeria Krakowska.

It's OK to have a tea with vodka at home to "warm" ourselves "up" (I wrote "warm up" in quotation marks, because alcohol DOESN'T warm the body up - it's a common myth) but you should never do it outside or shortly before going outside in winter. If you drink alcohol before going outside when it's very cold it's like if you put a time bomb in your body. At first it will warm you up in the sense that it cheats the termoregulation area in your brain, so you think you're warm, but you're not. What it really does is widening your blood vessels and causing the faster cooling of your body. You don't feel the cold at first but you are already freezing. Of course Poles know that, but this is forum for foreigners mostly, that's why we should sometimes be careful what we write, not to be misunderstood, so some poor sod doesn't freeze to death after taking a "friendly advice" on a forum. So, to sum things up - the message to all foreigners in Poland who are not used to low temperatures in winter: DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL OUTSIDE OR SHORTLY BEFORE GOING OUTSIDE IN WINTER. IT DOESN'T WARM YOU UP !

Half herbata/ half vodka ;) Torq Torq I believe it is true if you drink big amount of alcohol but I don't think a single shot don't make any harm even if you go out. And maybe not for warming up what about parties should we wait for summer going back home ;) ?

A bit cold - a bit of vodka and a lot of herbata cold - a big bit of vodka and a little bit less of herbata very cold - half vodka and half herbata freezing cold - a bit of herbata and a lot of vodka :)

Seriously, alcohol and very low temperatures don't go together well and no matter if you drink a little alcohol or a lot of it - it still DOESN'T warm you up a bit.
