And now my friends are telling me just wait till January and February when it gets really cold…. REALLY COLD!!!!!!!!!! -25 can be the average…….

They talk you crap. Normal temparture in Poland in the winter is around 0. There are sometimes waves of cold like this one but all together they shouldn't last for more than 2-3 weeks.

If you drink alcohol before going outside when it's very cold it's like if
you put a time bomb in your body.

I'm going out to do some Xmas shopping and then I will go to Rynek and have some of this delicious mulled wine :)
Now, if Torq is right I shall never come back :( if I am right (which I believe is the case, since PL women are ALWAYS right, aren't they Arien?) I will be back in an excellent, warm mood.

What is great about PL winter, is that low temperatures discourage ppl from going out but encourage them to stay in (often stay in bed). And you know what happens, when you stay all day in bed, especially when you have someone to share your bed with... ;)

mephias,

Do you now understand why our ancestors don't prefer passing to the north of Danube :)

In Krakow now. Freezing my butt off....it doesn't seem like it's very cold, but it seems far worse than -10 - 15.

Too young to remember.. I hear the Winters are brutal down there.

Poland is beautiful during the winter.
Everything looks so pure, white and clean outside (when you come inside everythng is wet and dirty:)
The freshly fallen snow in minus 7 or 10 forms crystals that glitter like diamonds when you walk around this winter wonderland.
The sound of your footsteps changes depending on how cold it is, yesterday in minus 12, the snow squeaked with every footstep but at higher temperatures the snow acts as sound insulation, sucking up all the travelling waves and giving the place a wonderful sense of peace and tranquillity.
The trees look naked in autumn only to be decorated in winter with snow. And when the snow blows on the trees on one side, all the trees lean over under the weight of the snow. This makes the trees look animated, as if they are all walking in the same direction :)
At lower temperatures the bacteria die and the air is so fresh, like it was medically treated or something.
It is essential to have the correct clothing and you must be aware of so many things that I am not used to coming from a temperate climate. Pipes may freeze and burst, heck everything may freeze and burst.
This time of year it does take extra effort to be energetic, the short cold days can take it out of you but if you force yourself to get out and about, it is amazing.
Here in the south of Poland it does not get so cold for long, you may have a few days of minus 20 Celsius. Like now for example, it was plus 7 or 9 last week now it is about minus 15 or 20 and next week it is expected to be plus again. They can predict the weather here to a great degree. This is something you can't really do where I am from, on an island in the Atlantic, as the ocean is too unpredictable and usually means rain anyway.
The coldest I have ever been in was minus 32 Celsius now that is a whole other thing, no Irish man should ever be in such cold. It was incredible but even with that said, I am glad to have experienced it as that is all this life is after all, a series of experiences, so I am happy enough to be part of these wonders of nature.
My main plan for this winter for having fun is to snowboard/ski (which is the best fun you can have with your clothes on), make snow sculpting in the garden and drive down to the frozen car park and skid around it.
There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing (well except for minus 32, then it is actually too cold :)

Yeah really, I have been in cold cities before but it is different here (maybe wind). It is so strong and it is not possible to warm yourself up when you are out.

Yeah it is a sin but it doesn't count if you commit bigger sins with it.

Yeah maybe, it's my first winter here and it seems I should buy some clothes for this weather.

Definitely, no doubt about it.
You have to otherwise it is miserably cold.
Get a ski jacket, long johns, scarf, hat (that covers your ears), gloves and warm shoes and your quality of life will improve ten fold.

Alcohol is inevitable in that circumstances.

It is not a sin as you have to protect your health :)

OK, OK, I can hear you all laughing, but it’s ok, I will survive. This afternoon I am moving to a fantastic little apartment in the Gdansk, right in the city centre.

You'll love the city center and we'll be neighbors. I live about 100m from Hala Targowa. We'll have to meet when I get back from Germany on 3 January. And it's balmy here today. The sun just dropped below the roofs of the flats around me, and it's warm. It's gone from -16 this morning to only -12. When I went out today I wore shorts and sandals-in my dreams!

BTW, I'm from San Diego (Southern California) and if I can get used to this, so can you. Actually, I love seeing the snow on the ground. Today really is beautiful, and life is good.

It's great to be alive, it certainly beats the alternative, sure there are plenty of people in the graveyard that'd love to have my problems.

+5 degrees inside my house

Light a fire, that is too cold to sit in.
You'd better take better care of yourself.

I find that the temperature is very close to the same as we have here in southern Ontario,Canada. If you look at a globe ,you get a good idea on the distance Poland and Ontario are to the Equator. They are almost the same .

The relative position to the Equator has little effect on the weather as most of Northern Europe's weather is control by the Gulf Stream and I am sure that Ontario will not be having temperatures up to 9C on Christmas day which has been forecast for some parts of Poland.

Weird it was -20 here last night and -15 tonight going to get the shorts on for Christmas though and might even have a BBQ lol

The temperature in Poland change very much during the winter. The same week you can have days with 0, -10 and -20 C degrees.

The winters are usually warmer in south western Poland than in north eastern, esp. in the beginning and end of the winter.

-6 in Manchester and snowed most of the day and forecast to snow over night...cant wait for the fun and games getting to work tomorrow. Thats the biggest downer in this country...a bit of snow and everything grindes to a hault! I was in the Czech Rep in Feb 2006 and they had the worst weather on record for about 20 years and I managed to travel round the country without a problem!

Very true. It was -14 here in Warsaw the other night and everything as normal except the bars were a bit quieter than normal.

It is strange that one. In Krakow as soon as the snow starts to lie on the ground an army of lil workers comes out of the blocks of flats and begins clearing it. Today it snowed and the whole community grinded to a stop :/
