Foreign foods in Krakow - where to buy kangaroo meat, Vegemite?

Zaij   Sep 26, 09, 11:43 /  #
Does anyone know where it's possible to buy Kangaroo Meat, vegemite, etc?

Also, does anyone know where to get Old El Paso Refried Beans and Enchilada Sauce?

Thanks a bunch,
Zaij.

vegemite

**** poor attempt at Marmite imitation!

Why settle for 2nd best, Marmite rules.

I honestly don't like either, one of my friends is after that. Kangaroo meat and the burrito ingredients are what I'm after.

Kangaroo meat? In Poland???? You would have a job finding this in the UK, never mind Poland :D

What's wrong with swan meat anyway ;)

I'm pretty sure I've seen burrito ingredients in Smaki Swiata in Galeria Krakowska and also Alma. As for kangaroo meat - best to order it through the web and they deliver it deep frozen, not fresh. Try www.steki.pl or google "miêso kangurze". It's not cheap though...

I thought Kangaroos were endangered and people couldn't use them for meat...

They would be if they were faced with Polish drivers :D

Smaki Swiata

Surprised they didn't call it "World Smaki", what with the current dumbing-down and Anglicisation of the Polish language ;)

Ha! Brilliantly said. I've been telling my family that if the Australian Police were in Poland 90% of Poles would lose their driving licenses.

No, they're not in any way endangered. There's actually too many of them, the Australian Army had to go and cull about 40,000 of them because they were damaging the eco system, they're that plentiful. Kangaroo meat is common in aussie shops.

No burrito ingredients in Alma (galleria kazimierz), unfortunately, but I'll give Smaki Swiata a try. Thanks.

The reason I'm after kangaroo meat is that some other foreigners who were doing classes with me suggested a 'foods of the world' thing where we each cook something from our country. I'm not looking forward to the British guys cooking :)

Any other ideas?

Also, how do you say 'refried beans' in Polish?

You're looking for a place to try kangaroo meat.I found a restaurant that cooks up this delicacy.I even found the address and phone number for you.Let me know how you like it.I may even try it myself !!!!! Smacznego !!!!

Fret@Porter

ul. Freta 37, tel./fax 022 635-3754, Open Mon.-Sat. 12:00-24:00, Sun. 12:00-23:00.

Sporting an incredibly diverse and unusual menu, Fret@Porter's kangaroo steak is one of the best we've had in Europe. The décor is loud and eccentric, yet somehow manages to be very tasteful.

I know, but with kangaroo meat you also have a good chance to get toxoplasmosis or salmonella.

Dutch oven Refried Beans
David Herzog

2 cups dried pinto beans
1 cup dried kidney beans
½ cup dried black beans
6 cups water
1 can chicken broth
1 medium onion, diced
1 Tbs. dried oregano
¼ tsp. cumin
1 Tbs. fresh garlic, chopped
½ cup mild to medium salsa
Salt and pepper to taste
2 Tbs. butter or lard

In a Dutch oven, combine beans, water, and chicken broth. Bring to a boil, and reduce heat to a slow boil, cover and cook for 2 to 3 hours, adding more liquid as needed. Uncover after beans are tender and continue cooking to reduce liquid, about 30 minutes. Add onion, garlic, oregano, and cumin. Simmer 15 to 30 minutes.
Pour off liquid until about 1 cup remains, then with a potato masher, mash the beans until mashed almost smooth. Add salsa and butter or lard, cook over low heat 5 to 10 minutes.
Serves 6 to 8

I love to enjoy traditional Mexican foods, with great refried beans as one of my favorites. Most refried bean recipes are loaded with fat (thus refried) for flavor. By adding salsa and using chicken broth, the fat in this recipe is greatly reduced and flavor is increased ten fold. Serve this recipe without mashing the beans, keeping the broth, and serving over a bowl of rice for a great beans and rice main course.

@TheOther,

Kangaroo meat is one of the leanest and healthiest meats you can buy.

@plk123

The only problem is that I don't know what half those things are in polish :(

A few years ago emus were very popular in the US, they had emu burgers, free samples of emu meat, emu sticks but it never took. Now people who paid $25.000 for a pair of emus can't give them away.

That's what they say about emu. it's considred red meat even though it's a bird, but very lean and healthier.
It smells bad. The same like kangaroo meat.
Must be an Australian thing

Bomi delikatesy in Solvay Park Mall on Zakopianska often has refried beans, as well as tortillas, spicy chilis, seasoning packets, etc, for making Tex-Mex food. We make Mexican steak tacos in a crockpot and get our stuff to make them, there. Excellent wine selection there, too.

Heard there is an organic food shop on Karmelicka Street that sells difficult to find herbs and spices and also has corn shell tacos and okra, but the stuff is expensive.

Thats a pretty complex menu. I make them by adding cooked beans to fried onions, garlic and spices. Mash up the beans and its done. There are several recipes on the web.

If you want specialist food like Mexican its best to find online recipes and buy the spices in the UK or online, although many are available here.

Have been eating and cooking kangaroo meat for many years and love the taste, texture and it’s gaminess, not easy to find even in Australia (the quality stuff that is)…

Just out of curiosity, what does kangaroo meat taste like? What is it comparble to in taste, texture, colour, aroma? Tough and gamey?
Is Australia still swarming with rabbits? Are they not eaten? Rabbit meat is not only delicious but very healthy (lean, low or no cholesterole) and versatile?

Kangaroo meat closely resembles beef in texture, color and flavour (when very fresh only slight gaminess), with aging (up to two/three months) it will develop strong gamy flavours that are very specific to kangaroo only, however aged deer comes to mind, meat is very tender when cooked properly (rare to medium rare for prime cuts).

The rabbit is not as common as it used to be due to the release of the Calise virus few years ego, however there are still plenty of them and commonly eaten in the countryside, the wild rabbits are smaller than their farmed counterparts but in my opinion much tastier …

Easy - go to Bomi or Alma shop and most probably you'll find some.

You can find Alma here
almamarket.pl/lokalizacje
they also sell via internet and deliver
alma24.pl/index.do (first you give your zip code to locate the nearest store)
