Non-Pork Polish Foods/Dishes

Why does nearly every Polish dish have Pork in it? I dont eat Pork(a choice since childhood) and i have found that most ingredients of most Polish Products include at least some Pork,. I am not complaining just wondering why it is so popular in Poland to have Pork with almost everything. I will be travelling and working in Poland for a while next month and am just worried about food. I love Polish food and culture and cant wait to try new things, but i dont wanna be boring and eat chicken and veg everyday. If there are other popular Polish dishes that DONT include pork, i would be grateful for your ideas and to hear them. Also another thing, one of my favourite meats is lamb, are there special lamb dishes i need to try?

April Valentine: but i dont wanna be boring and eat chicken and veg everyday We've had chicken at least three time this week :) It's the usual base for soup, is cheap and can be cooked in a number of ways. But I get your point. Turkey breast is quite popular and a lot of mince here is actually turkey not beef.

From what my grandmother told us, pigs were cheap to raise and it didn't take as long as beef to raise them for slaughter. The prime pork cuts were sold, the rest made into most of the traditional dishes and recipes most fondly remembered on this board. Beef was often expensive and poultry was reserved for special occasions and holidays. In today's world, you should be able to find many tasty dishes to eat that do not contain pork.

April Valentine: Also another thing, one of my favourite meats is lamb, are there special lamb dishes i need to try? There's very little lamb in Poland - it's not popular and most of what's raised here is sold to Italy. Pigs are popular because they're quicker to raise and they eat everything whereas a cow needs grass, or hay through the winter. There is quite a bit of veal around though. I think once you're here the dishes that aren't based on pork will become more obvious!

true poeple they are eating pork so much, poeple living in vilage they have possiblity to live with pig in hoom , so is realu good idea . alkohool and pork and zupa , pikanka :) soop in diner mybe in supper is good , like potage they are so close in culture , they stil remember in paste , and no body trust anther body. women so nice so pretty more respnsable than men, they are afraid so much about futur and abou lost maney. men want only watch football and drink and speak about he did in his life, no poland in EU , a lot girls want maried with some man not from pologne, this is her dream:)

Classic Polish non-pork dishes include: zrazy wołowe zawiajne (beef roulades) pieczeń po husarsku (hussar beef roast) sandacz po polsku (pike-perch polonaise -- with egg & dill topping) kołduny litewskie (lamb-filled ravioli) kurczę po polsku (roast chicken polonaise -- with dill-flavoured stuffing) kotlet z piersi kurczaka (breaded chicken-breast cutlets -- pork lovers won't know it's not a schaboszcak!) klopsiki, pulpety, kotlety mielone (meatballs, poached forcemeat balls, minced cutlets -- besides pork can be made with minced veal, beef or turkey or a combination thereof)

April Valentine: If there are other popular Polish dishes that DONT include pork, I dont know if its popular but i buy loads of Turkey, great meat and almost always succulent in Poland.

You can make Kotleti with minced <ground> beef instead of pork. My Mom often did and they were very tasty. Same with Golumpki. Also Polish people make a lot of fish based dishes too. Pierogi can be with potato and cheese fillings as well as other non pork fillings. Lir: Also Polish people make a lot of fish based dishes too. I blew the outlaws away with some good old fish (my batter recipe) and chips recently. I also made some chicken pie with a Polish Ham and leak filling, they loved it. Please tell me about the Polish fish dishes..

Wroclaw Boy: Im sure but where the hell are they? Look for them :) Wroclaw Boy: never a Polish one You were never a Polish chef nor are you Polish lol. Wroclaw Boy: any classic Polish fish dishes? I just posted you a link......some are in there, under 'Fish' and then try the type of way you wish to cook it too e.g. fried etc . It should produce some recipes for you. I'll have a look for some others when I get to where my Polish cookbook is. You may be interested in that one <if your wife could help with translations as the recipes are as authentic as you can get them > Also, as a Chef, you probably will enjoy trying the fish dishes.

Eat beef or chicken for goodness sake! It's not the be all and end all. I dont eat pork, I managed just fine just like I do in the UK, eat wild boar, its nothing like pig and if you have a reaction to pork like I do, you'll be just fine.

I noticed that Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk have a few really good ones on sale at the moment. I tend to use a Polish written Cookbook and as my Dad was a Chef, I learnt a lot from watching him too. Wroclaw Boy: some good old fish (my batter recipe) and chips recently. My parents version of that was to fry white fish that was first dipped into a beaten egg, then the fish was dipped into breadcrumbs and then fried. I was a Chef in top restaurants/hotels for 10 years i worked with many fish dishes, never a Polish one other than what i now know as salad.
