POLISH BREAD..... isn't it great...

As an Englishman i am quite used to the water filled chemical enhanced terrible bread found in UK supermarkets , so i was happy to discover real bread when i moved to Poland...Usually i buy the Tost bread ay my local supermarket , but today in a local shop i bought Chleb domowy zytni.... I only bought this because they had nothing else , but its wonderful stuff , really tasty.... Does anyone know anything about this bread...? Tell the forum what your favorite bread is....and why...

rye bread is delicious but you have to take it in doses not to overuse it I don't know if you can find pure rye bread in Poland (I guess the stuff you bought is still a mix of wheat and rye flour) still pure rye bread is quite common in Germany sometimes with caraway and it is delicious

I dunno anything, but I'm pretty sure someone's gonna type in "but it goes bad in 2 days" soon hehehe.... I love Polish bread ( especially the thick hard bread crust ) and breadrolls but I haven't actually tried any foreign bakery products in my life heh, I was always wondering about British breadrolls, what are the differences between them and so on, are there any Polish equivalents to a cob, scuffler, teacake, barm and many more. It looks like there's a much bigger diversity.. we've got only few in here, and most are imported ideas such as "cabiatta" ( one of my favourites ).. original polish breadrolls that I know are only: - bułka - kajzerka ( plus variations ;) ) As for the bread, most bakeries bake their breads and rolls through the night, some sell right from the stove, so it's nice to go there really really late or really really early.. fresh bread is delicious : o ( oh and don't mind the supermarket's stuff, their products are nice, but they are not as good as genuine products from real bakeries )

I don't see a problem anywhere :) My dream life is wake up early go to the local bakery buy fresh hot bread, carry it back home, prepare a breakfast for my lassie and then go to work : p It really would be nice from time to time ;)

You know, this must be a fairly common experience. I live in New Zealand. I had been a consumer of bread here for a very very long time. I was content with the bread I bought in the shops here. Then I went to live in Poland for three months. Now that I am back in New Zealand I can't eat the bread here any more. There are two types of bread in this country; Soft white bread which is like a kind of unsweetened cake. Wholemeal bread which is as if it is baked with sawdust and bits of un-ground grain in it. Now if I want to eat bread, I have to figure out how to make chleb...

Personally I prefer "razowy" (wholemeal bread?). It is dark and a little sour. Some people have to use to it, but if they do, they stay with it :-). But for sweet things (i.e. jams) I prefer white bread and rolls... Tip: bread will be fresh longer if you pack it in a bag and put into the fridge.

My wife bought one of the best smelling loaves a couple of days ago. One of those loaves that you couldn't get your nose out of. It tasted really good too. I'd love to be a bread sampler when it comes straight out from the oven. Polish bread is amongst the best but I have a feeling that a lot of the varieties produced don't find their place in supermarkets. I'm gonna try Dom Chleba.

I have a friend in Lobez that makes her own bread , several varieties , but the onion bread she makes is just amazing , best thing i ever tasted...

Onion bread, that's where it's at. I love onion or garlic bread. Oh, Polish bread is good in a soup with bulion/stock cubes, garlic and pepper.

Now i feel hungry...i am going to have to go out and get some bread to have my heinz beans on...I akso just recieved a big box of cuppa soups , so its important to get some decent bread to dunk in it...

Polish bread is pretty darn good. Eat it with cheese (probably not Polish if you have a choice) and tomato (Polish, fresh, grown locally, none of this mass produced supermarket crap if you don't mind) and in all honesty you are eating like a king. Wash down with someting cold and gold. Polish. If you have a choice. Bardzo yummy :) Smacznego

Try Wodząnka, wildrover. Cut up a whole clove of garlic into fine pieces and a few slices of cut Polish bread too. With that done, heat up a litre of water to the boil and then throw in 2 stock cubes, mixing them round all the while. When they have fully dissolved, put in the garlic and heat for about 2 mins on a high setting. Lastly, throw in the bread and wait for another 30 seconds or so. Voila! It wards off colds and other ailments. It tastes darn good too, especially if you have those little chili stock cubes from Knorr. I threw a couple of them into the mix too. Cheap and cheerful! Add pepper to taste!

That sounds great , but a bit too close to cooking to me..heating up a pan of beans , or slapping some sliced cheese in my Polish bread is about all i can be bothered to do..... My Russian friend assures me all that is going to change tho , she is a great cook it seems...AND she can make bread.. Anyone tried Black Russian bread..? its the sort of stuff you could bulid a house with..!

I tried the black russian bread and it has a distinct flavour because of the vineger used in the baking.But ---you know----with a little help from the Polish Vodka---It actually tasted pretty good !!!!

Śliwowica is plum brandy, not vodka. Wildrover, it's easy. I don't cook that often either but that soup is quick and easy. The texture of Polish bread is ideal, it is a little sour which helps.

It's eaten with bread there too. Just ask Crow, it's sth of a luxury drink in the Balkans, sth that you would bring out to host a VIP guest.

Don't you guys have any small bakeries where you come from? Polish bread is excellent, but I could buy the same bread in California. What Poland doesn't have is sourdough bread, and I miss it.

There is a lot of very good bread in Poland, if you go to the right places and buy the right stuff. But there is also a lot of bread that's not so tasty.

The small family run bakeries seem to be the place to go , if you can find one...
