I'm not really into cakes and pastries but I have to think of a menu of Polish cakes or pastries that would possibly be sold in a coffee shop so please could PFers give me some idea of what should be on that menu?

Thank you. :)

Super thread, PD. Whetting appetites already.

I love miodownik. We may have sth similar in Scotland but I wouldn't know what to call it.

Donuts are always welcome, with rose jam.

Pastry with custard fillings :)

Babki is a standard Polish cake here. Nothing special but quite tasty and had with tea. I know Scots like it. It's sth akin to Madeira cake.

Oh, ajerkoniak is advocaat, PD. They put it in ice-cream here, scrumptious :)

More pączków please :)

kremówka

Find out what kind of kremówki ate JP II and call them 'Pope's kremówki'. They'll be a hit.

If this picture is miodownik then we have something similar but not the same...I think. ;)

That's not miodownik, no. I know it to see it. The missus is gonna be here in 10 mins with it. It has a yellow layer, with fake sugary stuff but very nice. Miodownik wipes the floor with that cake you posted.

Thanks for your help in this thread everyone. :)

this is not chinese food.

lol.

My dad was a chef, he made some fantastic torte's but I never see a decent recipe like the ones he made. They were to die for..........

I think I can remember how they were made, the ingredients but I don't know the quantities for sure. But I do have a Polish cookbook and have just ordered a more modern one so I shall do some investigating when I have some more free time.

Was it a biszkopt type of torte?

We made a great one with fruit and real whipped cream. Yummie.

Try Chocolate Swiss Roll. In Polish it is called rolada. It's in my fridge now, yummy!

biszkopt

that's really more like biscotti and not a torte unless that's a regional slang or some sort.

don't forget favorki!
karpatka!
placek makowy (besides makowiec)!

that's really more like biscotti and not a torte unless that's a regional slang or some sort.

biszkopt = the actual baked cake (before you cut it, put filling in it, etc etc.)

My dad was a chef, he made some fantastic torte's but I never see a decent recipe like the ones he made. They were to die for..........

the secret is that you soak the actual cake layers in liquor to moisten them up
granny once made this one great one that I (8 or 9 at the time) was forbidden to have more than a small sliver of at a time due to the % in the thing. ^_^ nice alternative way to get drunk, in my honest opinion

No, it is really airy, fluffy.

biszkopt = the actual baked cake (before you cut it, put filling in it, etc etc.)

That's the one!

you bake a biszkop

Biszkopt cake from Poland

you cut it up (sorry, couldn't find a pic of adding the liquor to make it moist >_< )

fill it with yummies

make the outside look good

and thus you have a cake

you bake a biszkopt

The recipe we used didn't make one that tall. Maybe short on ingredients? Upsize them?

That's the one though. We used the juice from the can of peaches to moisten it - but if the kids weren't going to eat it, maybe :-)
