Taco Bell was among the US fastfood joints that appeared in Poland in the 1990s along with McDonald's, Pizza Hut and Burger King. However it has long since disappeared. Apparently the Mexican flavours have limited appeal to the Polish palate? I know there are a few Mexican-style restaurants but not on the mass scale of fastfood outlets. Any comments?

Taco bell came to London too and had a prime spot in Leicester Square but disappeared after a very short time in the early or mid nineties. Maybe nobody in Europe took to it? It was fairly nasty by all accounts.

Yeah, just one comment: Poles didn't like Taco Bell. Taco Bell didn't sell enough Tacos in PL. So Taco Bell buggered off. That's it. There is no deeper meaning to this.

It's a general thing all across Europe as you don't see much Taco Bells everywhere. But in fact, I doubt if they were ever big in Europe at all.

If you go to the Taco Burrito King on Belmont ave in Chicago its full of Polish people.

Real Mexican food is delicious, Taco Bell blows!

Real Mexican food is diverse. Each Mexican state has it's own dishes, handed down from native tribes. One recipe involves the aquisition and cooking of a wasp's nest with wasps and larvae inside.

Second that! I like the burritos you can get at Chipotle's in the US...You can put them together yourself, so in theory you can have a different burrito every day, should you want so. But I also have to admit that I couldn't eat MX food every day as the base ingredients are much alike. That is, from what I've seen in the US. I've never been to MX myself, so I can't judge on the quality and diversity of the food there.

Margaea, I'm not sure how Mexican the burrito is, anyway. It could be a "Tex Mex" adaptation. Mexico has so many variations of these foods with little old ladies selling them in open markets. There's so many variations, I cannot recall the specific names. One burrito might have refried beans (frijoles) while others have this slimy cactus leaf inside. In some parts of Mexico it's traditional to eat dishes made from cactus leaves. Mexico has carne mercedos complete with swarms of flies and the heads of many animals.

Well, to be honest, I don't really mind if it's TX-MX or MX, I still like burritos a lot :) Especially the ones you get at Chipotle's. Did you ever go there? It's a very good restaurant - they serve MX food made with only biological ingredients, so you don't have to worry about getting any weird chemicals in your body...:S

There's a lot of Mexican restaraunts around here, owned and run by people from Mexico that have moved here. They serve Tex Mex food. I have been to On The Border (a franchise). I like their enchiladas. That's my fave Mexican restaraunt around here. I've never been to Chipoltes. Several Pablo Grills just opened. If I see a Chipolte's, I'll be sure to go. Oh, yeah, there's lots of Taco Bells, too, with Black Jack tacos (tacos with black shells). I've had a couple of them with chicken. They're pretty good.

Its another franchise chain like Fridays, a step above Taco Bell but nowhere near authentic.

I like the privately owned restaurants that have their own recipes:)

The authentic stuff is way too exotic for me. I'll stick with Tex Mex. They don't serve the authentic stuff in the restaraunts, even.

There's a big difference between authentic Mexican food and authentic Polish food. Most Americans would not eat authentic Mexican food, which is why they serve
Tex Mex in the restaraunts. Real Mexican food is too full of meat by products (like beef brains) and ingredients like Wasps and Cactii which is why it doesn't get served in restaraunts.

My city has more Mexicans than your entire state! Mexicans eat those dishes at home but they don't serve them in restaraunts. I've never been in a Carne Mercedo so I don't know what's in there (there's a huge one in my city). I'm sure they have what you mentioned and much more. I don't know because I don't eat authentic Mexican food.
Yes, I'm sure if I went to the Mexican Meat market I could get what you mentioned easily, it's just I don't feel like eating it.

What is that big difference?
Authentic. Do you mean that it's prepared by native Mexicans or Native Poles?
Authentic. Is it made with Mexican beef or Polish beef?
Authentic. Is it because foreigners get sick when Mexicans prepare the meals right on the streets with dogs and rats walking around. I went to McDonald's when there. At least I knew it was authentic American food controlled and inspected so I won't get salmonella poisoning. Many foreigners do get sick on Mexican food because their body is not used to their bacteria and viruses.
That's why others get sick from the piggy virus strain because it comes from another country which is not hygenic.

Many Mexicans are migrant workers coming upstate from the south for the summer harvest season. You see many of them picking pickles, onions, strawberries etc.
The Mexicans in Milwaukee have taken over the south side which was a Polish neighborhood at one time, forcing the Poles to move out. The streets are in Spanish, the stores which were Polish stores are now Mexican stores.

I agree with you there. In Cali we've got authentic Mexican food, practically on every city block.

A sincere thanks PF, for putting up with me FIVE terrific years, muah!

I was at a party in Mnpls once and my Mexican friend wanted have me eat a certain soup - he said it was delicious with cow-brains and some intestines. I politely refused. Yuck!

If it's TX-MX what they serve in the US and if the authentic food contains brains, intestines or stomachs and the like, then I indeed prefer the TX-MX food yes. But that's also because I won't eat any other meat than Cow, Pig, Chicken or Fish...And have it severly spiced or sauced as I don't like the plain taste of just meat, even when it's peppered and salted.

Not criticising, but you are missing out. Some of the most flavourful, nutritious and interesting meals come from offal. Boudin Noir, Haggis, Fois Gras....the list goes on...mmmmm!

Fois Gras

Hm, even if I would like it, I still wouldn't eat it because of the very cruel treatment the geese get in order to produce it.

Guess I'm just a bit picky :)

Actually filled with liver, lung, heart and kidney...ok, so maybe I' not selling it.

To be fair I never eat french Foie Gras because of that, but you can get "ethical" stuff which is also rather delicious. It was more just an example of tasty things coming from offal.
