When I was studiyng Polish I was taught that one says: cz³oweik umar³ and pies zdech³.
But I noticed that the Polish voice-over version of Aninmal Planet says things like: Mimo usilynch prób jego uratowania koñ niestety umar³.
Is that correct? Is that some kind of nowomowa (newspeak), something peculiar only to Animal Planet or what? Would you native speakers of Polish say: Wczoraj nasz kot umar³?

Usually when a person dies you say "umar³", an animal "zdech³". But if the animal was a beloved pet, many people say "umar³"

For an animal it is zdychaæ sobie and it has also been used for a person in a prose context.

That's correct, in Polish if cz³owiek we use "umrzeæ/umar³" and if zwierzê we use "zdech³" or "pad³".

Polish say: Wczoraj nasz kot umar³?

Wczoraj nasz kot zdech³.
