Michal:
Americans spend their summer holidays n language programmes abroad and the credit points count towards American degrees back home in the States.

those are called electives.

Michal:
I thought that European degrees were highly thought of in America.

maybe just a few select unis and degrees.. if they are felt not to be "up" to american standards, they aren't thought of highly at all.

however studia licencjackie last only 2-3 years, whereas

3-3.5 years, 4.5-5 for magister. No one gives any degree after 2 years.

Looks like in this topic once again Yanks are desperately trying to prove that they are not idiots and Polonophobes spread their usual stinking sh*t.

Harry:
In the UK students study at school for 12 years (age 4 to 16).

Fascinating. What these students study at the age of 4 ?

A licencjat does not take 3.5 years! The course starts in October of one year and finishes in the May of the year after the year after next, i.e. it takes two and a half years. I know this because I used to teach on a licencjat program.

A magister takes 4.5 years normally but it is very easy for students to structure the course so that they have no classes at all in the fifth year (all they need to do is write their thesis), so the course is in effect 3.5 years. I know this because I used to teach on a magister program.

These days it is referred to as Early Years Foundation Stage and used to be Key Stage Zero, also refered to as Foundation Stage 2. The literacy requirements state that 5 year olds should:
readily use written language in their play and learning;
use phonic knowledge to write simple regular words and make phonetically plausible attempts at more complex words;
show an understanding of how information can be found in non-fiction texts to answer questions about where, who, why and how;
begin to form simple sentences, sometimes using punctuation;

There are similar levels of requirements for numeracy.

To be honest, many American programmes are also a joke. The sports scholarships (something that's illegal in the EU) are one example of this - does anyone genuinely believe that the best College players are undergoing a full academic timetable with no help?

A friend of mine obtained quite a few credits by going BOWLING. How can any academic system reward something like this?

Likewise, many of the Liberal Arts degrees are just a complete joke - and while I personally would've liked to have done one, there's hardly any academic merit in there.

I'd suggest that most Europeans would see most American universities as poor, too.

In England there are in fact degrees given out after two years of study but they are called foundation degrees equivalent to H.N.C.

American educational system is a joke. You can actually easily do your bachelor's in 3 years, only those lazy or those that work and study at the same time take more time than that. If you look at the program itself, the four year program consists of two years of core courses - which are the equivalent of Polish High School (only 3 courses out of the two years are college level - major specifc). The following two years are comparable to what is studied at Polish Universities. I was studying at Polish Uni for 2 years without getting a degree, and some of my courses turned out to be equivalents of Senior (4th year) year in the leading American business university. I received credits for them towards my Bachelor's degree. So how about that? I will never agree that Bachelor's is the same as Magister.

I agree with you. American high schools put too much emphasis on other things: football/basketball/wrestling and socializing. Being a nerdy know-it-all with good grades isn't considered "cool". The results are glaring. Americans waste two years learning in Community Colleges and Universities what they should have learned in high school. They waste time all in the name of socializing and 'being cool'. Americans could learn a thing or two from Europe and Asia when it comes to high schools and Universities. There needs to be a complete overhaul.

The University I graduated from was on a semester sytem. The year was divided in half. As oppose to quarters. I took double classes 6 and had 2 studios. Lived, slept and breathed school. Summer courses were 6 weeks for 3 credits the equivalent of a semester. Basically, school all day. Bachelor's degree, 2 yrs. required courses and 2 for major. Typically, 2 more for Masters and 2+additional for Doctorate. A college town solely for school in the middle of wheatfields. Only went home a few times a year and it was far from home. Fun, true college experience.
