Co znaczy bodaj w "Marzenia artysty o pięknie, harmonii i szczęściu bodaj najpełniejszy wyraz znałazły w serii obrazów malowanych w jego posiadłości w Janówce..."

I just can't seem to wrap my head around "bodaj" and its semantics.

Bodaj = probably, mostly likely; a slightly more elegant way of saying chyba

Polonius3' explanation is very good - in this case it means most probably.

Bodaj is also used as:
bodaj spełniły sie twoje marzenia = may all your wishes come true.
bodaj byś zdechł = I wish you died

I can't explain in a "linguistic" way because I'm not a teacher but that's what comes to my mind as far as native speaker.

Hope this helps!!!

Bodaj byś cudze dzieci uczył! - I bet this one is not pleasant for the teachers.

I'm not sure about the etymology, but we may rightly suppose that the word comes from: Bóg daj -> Bógdaj -> bodaj.

that seems like a far reach.. bog daj doesn't fit in that sentence either.

Bodaj < Bóg daj hits the bull's-eye. According to Brückner it has been in use since the 17th century.
