Call me a friend, someone who cares.

supaed Edited by: Moderator   Jun 27, 09, 23:20 /  #
Hi, I really need help here...

I guess I want to know what a Polish woman thinks of me...

We have a beautiful girl together, but we are no longer together, However she lets me see my daughter every two weeks...

We have always played games with each other, and have never been honest with each other. I really like her...

All I want is some translation of the following into Polish.

Call me a friend, someone who cares. Someone who knows your situation. By answering to this honestly may fulful all your dreams and wishes. Right now, at this moment, who do you want to be with, more than anyone else? Be honest, and you may be surprized :)

Uważaj mnie za kolegę, za kogoś kto troszczy się. Za kogoś kto zna Twoją sytuację. Jeśli odniesiesz się do tego szczerze to może spełnisz tym samym swoje marzenia i życzenia. Z kim najbardziej chciałabyś być teraz , w tym właśnie momencie?
Bądź szczera to może bedziesz mile zaskoczona.

a friend is "przyjaciel" rather that "kolega".
"kolega" not necessarily cares ;)

if the intention of your words was to ask/suggest that she should call you a friend,
I'd put it like this:
"spróbuj zobaczyć we mnie przyjaciela, kogoś, komu na Tobie zależy.
Kogoś, kto zna Twoją sytuację..."
En: Try to perceive me as a friend...

Best friend/ or good friend means "przyjaciel" and it was not mention, that's why if only "friend", in Polish it means "kolega" (or female: koleżanka)

As the poster have mentioned: they play games between each other, in this case it's maybe "game" with words . We don't know if he wants to be called "best friend" (przyjaciel) he clearly stated "a friend". Believe me it's not unusual that friend (kolega) can care.

Hi Axid. I am trying to understand the meaning and grammar of this. Does it literally translate as "someone, who cares about you". If so I am wondering why komu is in the Dative. As a learner, I would have written kogoś, kto na Tobie zależy.

Is zależy being used as an impersonal verb here? e.g. Czy Ci na mnie zależy?: literally: does it care to you about me?

Thanks!

Ystad,
yes, it literally translates "someone who cares about you"
and yes, that is the case.
in Polish you don't say "I care about you".
"zależy" cannot be used as an active verb, which means you cannot say
ja zależę na Tobie.

instead, you use:
zależy + dative na + locative -
zależy mi na Tobie.

I find "friend" a bit more that "kolega".
even though various dictionaries use it that way
I found natives using nouns like "mate", "pal", "buddy", "fellow" or "colleague"
when they talk about "kolega" (with some exceptions, of course)
btw. to me "kolega" is just a random person, from class, work etc.
closer to an acquaintance rather that a friend.
(maybe the difference in understanding the word in Polish is the case.
nonetheless, I believe that the distinction is quite important).
